Hello everyone,

I just recently purchased a speedster replica. I have been spending the last month trying to get it into good working order. I have a ton of questions about my car. So I will start. Can anyone help me identify if the car was a home build or if it was build by CMC or fiber fab? As far as I know the car was built in 1988 and the dash cover goes right to the edge of the windshield on each side . The engine has no letters before the serial number. The alternator housing has some writing I think maybe Spanish/Brazilian? The dog house fan is wide and more square like. The interior has a pad for the rear but not a seat for a passenger.

Any help would be appreciated

While I suspect all those CMC sitting in airports back in '80 were build for CMC, I don't believe many were actually "factory built."  Nothing wrong with home built if its done by someone with skill and shortcuts aren't taken.  Your car is 30 years old.  The interior looks to have VS door panels, boots and carpets - suspect seats too.  CMC/FF came with factory gel coat finish.  The hood handle originally came with CLASSIC SPEEDSTER (CMC or FF if Fiberfab) crest on the hood handle and the car came with a gold CMC build badge which was builder applied (or not).

A picture of the engine will tell if its older single port or a later dual port motor (sounds like by shroud and fan).  What year is the pan?  Pre '69 will be swing axle and after that IRS.  I'd get as many receipts and build details from PO.  Some things are impossible to tell on the engine without a teardown.

Is your engine grill the single bar "hibachi" style or the 3 bar style. Your door panels and toppers are definitely Vintage Speedsters, but the pad on the dash is not.

Odds are it's a CMC or FiberFab (based on its age) that has been updated with Vintage Speedster gauges and door panels, but it's really hard to say for sure with the picture and information you've provided at this point.

The ones I provided can confirm if IM (hinges and hood crest) plus IM used a stick on silver id label in passengers door frame which could have been removed during a repaint..  I think all IMs were painted and not a factory colored get coat so check for shiny colored gel coat.  Early IMs used the cast 1 piece engine lid hibachi grill just like FF/CMC.

Maybe shots of where the kick panel sliding heat vents are located and the engine lid grill and the front turn signals but all could have been swapped out over years.  The 3 dash rubber eyebrows are CMC/FF (not sure if on early IMs?) - the rest of interior is Vintage Speedster (VS).

Curious what this means? So the passenger sits in the rear seat area?  Assume you mean a real back seat.  A Speedster is a 2 seater - only legless folks could sit in back seat or kids under 6.

The interior has a pad for the rear but not a seat for a passenger.

Welcome to the madness! Looks like you found a nice Speedster. I really like the interior and the curved shifter. The paint job looks really fine too.

The frunk and bonnet hinges are the same as those on my CMC wide body. Same for the 2" square tubing "frame rails" on each side of the engine compartment, placement of master cylinder, turned around fuel tank with welded filler, frunk latch and lip seal, underside of the bonnet, and the fiberglass bumpers with rubber and aluminum brightwork. I bet dollars to donuts it's a CMC, which is related to FiberFab. I found a copy of the FiberFab Speedster assembly manual online, it's been an invaluable resource.

Nice fan shroud. Not very common.  I want to say its a Puma or Thing shroud. Judging from what you've shown, someone took special care to build your car.

Would it be possible to get a shot from the side?

Another thing, the hole/indent for the hood prop... I dont know that my car has one. If it does, Ive never seen or used it! Learned something new about my car today!

After seeing added photo - I tend to agree that it is a VS roller.  One issue VS always had was rushing a car out of the shop - when they should have spent an extra week sorting it out.  A roller finished by an owner or someone that cares is a great thing - plus you get features that aren't run of the mill.  Always try to get as much background (receipts, spec sheets) as possible from the previous owner when acquiring a car.
