Just purchased my dream car. It's a 6 out of 10 on condition. I'm located in Utah. The car need many little things to get it where i want it to be. To start with, where should i look for parts? It has an ugly 70's bug steering wheel on it ...yuck. Drum brakes suck..i want to install discs up front. And help to get me started would be appreciated.

Thanks gang

Bug steering wheel is definately a tribute to the humble donor.  Decide what you want to spend - Grant/Formuling France for ~100 to Nardi replicas for $300-400 to Banjo replicas.  They come 13" to 15" diameter and dished or not dished.  Lots of decisions.  A few used wheel have been offered here on SOC for reasonable $. Check VWISPWest.com for steering wheels.

Before buying disc brake parts decide if you are happy with the current height - Dropped spindles bought with the disc brake kit saves some $ (but introduces other issues as it increases the front stance).

Post some pictures and we'll expand your shopping list!  Find out as much as you can from the previous owner - like bore of engine, cam used, etc. - this will make maintenance and modifications easier down the road.

Lots of places for VW parts like CIP1 - beware of cheap low quality parts.  Speedster replica parts - VS, Stoddard, Sierra Madre, etc.

if the front drums are working properly they do pretty good, I just redid mine ( to lazy to put the disc kits on Ive had for 4 years now) there is a few key things to bug drums that arnt like that on any ther cars Ive seen, but Ive only worken on car for about 40+ years & ran a forgin carshop for a few of them(mostly your a peein cars). first off the front adjusters are at an angle, and as such they have to go on corectly turn them 180 when you have the shoes off & your screwed, they will still look just fine for the most part but wont hold the shoes right.  and you have 4 of them, so well out of the 4 I only had 3 rong......books are a wonderfull thing.I pulled the new shoes I had just put on and turned the adjusters to line up corectly,(I had just removed them to greessee them& didnt know they were angled  And the other major thing with bug front breaks is the wheel cylinder, it's not on top like most cars, nor is it on the bottom, but rather it is on the rear side and the shoes are on top&bottom. well that dosent sound like an issue, and in reality it shopuldent be, but it is. as there is 1 wheel cylinder for both sides of the car. not a left&right, just 1 part#well just waht does that mean??? well the bleeder screw is in the middle.so?? well poke a hole in your beer in the middle what happens, the beer runs out, does the air run out ??? no it dosent., now try to squirt more beer in the hole, dod you fill it up?? no the part above the screw is full of air and wont let the beer in untill you pressurize it... then you have a mushey beer, answer to the issue lay your beer sideways and you can now fill it. the same applys for the vw front wheel cylinder, either put the car on it's nose when your bleeding it or remove the shoes and unbolt the wheel cylinder turn it sideways use a "C" clamp to hold the pistons in and them have somebody pump as you bleed all the air out. and dont forget all that air has moistore and lets the cylinder rust like hell and it falls down to  the bottom cup& rust it solid.  I did my front breaks about a month ago like this and it's almost like power breaks now. and the peddell is right up top where it has never been before, and I thought it had realy good breaks then. I buzed it up to 85mph a few times 3 days ago doing some oil temp testing and the breaks work totaly awassom.
