Hi all, I am new to this forum but not the VW scene. I fix aircooled VW's every day & have built a few bugs & buses already.

I am looking to build a UK manufactured Speedster Clinic 356 Speedster replica over the winter.

I have stripped a 1303, IRS chassis for the rear suspension & have a 2" narrowed front beam & dropped spindles to fit. I will be using a Speedster Clinic supplied chassis to make things easier.

I am still undecided with wheels, I have sourced wide 5 drums, so could run steels or BRM replicas. I am temped with the 17" Fuchs replicas on sale at the moment as they would look wild.

Not sure on colour yet either, but there is plenty of time to decide.

I will put a build thread up somewhere with a link to it for all to see the progress.

Hopefully it will be fun to build & drive!

Pete, Welcome to the Madness!

I documented my build here, and it was nice to hear what other folks had to say along the way. I'll look forward to seeing your progress.

My car has been called Projekt Hoopty for years now, so you can use that as search criteria if you decide you want to try something off the wall on your build. I probably tried some of the same things, so it might save you a little R&D ...

Cheers!
I have my new chassis at last, man was that heavy to lift. I have man handled a stock pan on my own before to move it around or flip it over, but this is nuts.

It's gonna handle nice if it's that stiff.

It took 3 of us to get it in the workshop!

Hopefully I will get some time to start painting the floor soon & fit up a few parts.

There is a body with my name on it, so that won't be far away too...

There are chassis pics on the www.speedsterclinic.com site in the gallery page. It's just been updated too.

I will get some pics of mine soon, it's leaned up against the wall out of the way for now...
Pete:

I ended up getting a cheap (Northern freight) 1000 lb. winch which I put above the rafters in my garage to do the heavy lifting on the pan when I was building it up. I had had shoulder surgery a few months before and couldn't lift diddly so the winch became invaluable both then and later getting the body positioned and mounted. the garage didn't have a ceiling so I put a couple of 10 ft. 4" X 4" beams across the rafters (cross ties) and sat the winch beam on top of that. Never did a structural analysis on it but I could easily lift most of the car (pan and body) without anything flexing at all.

The body is designed to fit the chassis.

Gary from the Speedster Clinic is actually going to come & bond the body to the pan once I have it rolling.

I am going to see him one day this week to pay for the body which he has in stock.

Hopefully if I get my finger out it will be rolling soon & he can come & do it. I am making use of the quiet time of year to crack on with it.

I will buy some brake pipe tomorrow & make those up too.
