Angela - I'd bet that idea came from the bean counters. By glueing on the u-joints, one union member can assemble the drive shaft instead of two.

On new Mustangs, the entire front suspension sub-frame, complete with engine and trans, is factory assembld from underneath the car. That's one big reason why the buyer can't fix anything from the top side later on.

To replace the air cleaner on a Honda Magna motorcycle, Honda ONLY sells a complete plastic moulded thing-a-ma-jig that is 10% air cleaner 90% structure for $40. You can bet i cut out the air cleaner and re-fit it with a piece of an K&N that is re-usable and even sounds better.

And on and on. That is typical of what happens when science meets operating costs. But you all know that. OK to vent girl!
Oh REALLY, Vince? Sandblast THIS? Well big boy I've got a 100 foot air hose on the compressor. I'll give you 50 feet of headstart...;-P

We spent a couple of hours taping out a stripe (and about 3 days prior arguing about it). Plain SS stripe on the hood, but this is the side. It's a take-off of the Yenko stripes on the hot-rod chevy's of the late 60's and early 70's. Yenko never did a Monte Carlo, but if he did, I think it would have looked like this.

The car will be black (duh - you know Steve) and the stripe that is whitish primer here is going to be the dark charcoal metallic that I painted the wheels with. Red "SS" letters at the back.

Not quite ready for paint yet, this is just helping us gel in our little brains what we want to do with the graphics. Sneak peak for you guys and gals.

We spent this weekend (two 12 hour days...) cleaning, sanding and jambing the car. For heaven's sake those doors are HUGE.... Doors, door jambs, underside of the trunk lid, trunk jamb, underside of the hood and inner fender lip, all glossy black now.

It's GO TIME... The paint booth is rented Friday (5 days from now) thru Sunday.

You probably ought to think about forwarding this thread to your Dad's hometown newspaper reporter as a prologue to the feature piece he could write about your efforts.
A newspaper clipping in the glove box would save your Dad having to explain himself to every cop on the West Coast!
I'm really glad you're still working on this. When's his birthday? Or has it passed?
What's the plan?
Delivery date is Friday June 19th at 9am. (the friday before Father's day). Medford Mail Tribune reporter Sanne Sprecht will be in attendance! Car will be delivered at the Medford Cruise sign in. We have permission to do a ceremony to deliver and to take the car in the poker run immediately afterward.

That way Dad gets to DRIVE it right then. I did the interior yesterday. Sanded, re-sealed all the floor seams, primered and rhino-lined the interior, the inside of the roof and the entire trunk. I'll shoot you guys a picture and post it today. Car goes to the paint booth tomorrow...

GAME ON!

This is the interior of the car "before" and "after". Doesn't look like that much work, but sanding, re-sealing and coating this and the trunk were about 15 hours of work...

Picked up the rest of the materials for painting this weekend. The paint and body work materials bill is well over $1,500 for this car.

The beast is painted! Now I'm not going to say it looks good, but even my picky as$ed husband thinks it's good and he's forever bad mouthing his paint jobs...

This is just a few hours after paint and is the worst the paint will look. By two days later, it had laid down completely flat. I left on Monday morning so I didn't get to see the "two days later" but the day I shot this (Sunday) it looked absolutely STUNNING! (right now I'm in Alaska working). Might be one of the best Steve has ever done.

He free-handed the stripes. Man's got SKILLZ!

You know the Monte Carlo isn't my favorite car, but DAMN.
I'm in love with that prep-work and paint job! Very nice, even job. Consistent striping, the pinstripes are perfectly spaced, the colors are perfect for the era ... Wow.

If Steve's ever bored, ship him out to us, will'ya?
Yeah, be seeing YOU real soon! Like tomorrow! Just got back from Alaska last night about 1am. Trying to run around and do everything.... Fired up Dad's SS and took it outside to REALLY see what she looks like. Oh goodnes.... Steve has truly outdone himself. Can't wait to LOWER the front end, put those killer wheels on and finish up the spoilers, etc. After Carlisle I have a day or two at home (then back to Alaska). Then it's flat out GO TIME!!!

Angela,

First of all ---- all that can be said of the car and what you are doing for your Dad is Wow! I was hoping to meet you and Steve this week-end, but I had other things that came up. You'ii get to see Tom's car there though, and by-the-way thanks again for all your help.

May God Bless,

Holy smokes, he sold SIX car covers to our little fiendish group? That's pretty impressive! Of course, the Monte's car cover uses enough material to make about three speedster covers - LOL! Thanks for checking on the cover for me Danny - much appreciated!

I'm up in Alaska right now (left Friday morning). We got back from Carlisle PA Monday night. I pulled an all-nighter Wednesday on the car... It now has 2.5 inch drop spindles, LS1 12" brakes (replacing the 9.75 factory turds), all the lights are wired, has a seat and a seatbelt both of which will come out to put the carpet in. Put all the hood door and trunk rubbers in, aligned the bumper and tail-light extensions. Need to put the upper window rubbers in still - they are a real pain. Had it aligned and took it for a 60 mile drive.

No leaks, no drips, no problems and a real healthy set of brakes! Got to have the shift linkage adjusted (transmission warranty includes adjustments), but other than that, it sounds GREAT, drives GREAT and can't wait for my Dad to get behind the wheel.

Real weird stage of this project... Most of the time on project cars, things are two steps forward and one step back (at best). But not now. Everything is falling into place as if guided by a divine hand. Example: The factory seatbelts are maroon - won't go with the new interior. I had bought a set of trans am seatbelts that were supposed to fit. Well, the front pair don't really work properly without alot of mickey mouse effort. Never ever mickey mouse a seat belt or brakes... I gave up and put the maroon belt in to drive the car. Then checked on Ebay and what do I find? A full set of gray Monte Carlo seatbelts, all matching, all hardware, all working and not faded. Perfect for the car, perfect for the interior. Bought 'em!

Hopefully Steve will get the fender extensions, mirrors and rear spoiler painted while I'm up here. I get back on the 3rd. So I'll being goin' nuts assembling the car. It's really AWESOME to be at the point where the car is going back together and everything done takes it one step closer to finished!

Oh and Dad? He has had a great week! The warm weather, an adjustment of medication and continued use of oxygen have all come together for him. He has felt better this week than he has felt in probably five years. Good thing, too. I want him to have enough lungs to yell YEE HAW when he plants his right foot down on the go pedal!

Hang on Daddy - you're in for a RIDE!

angela

Thanks guys! And Cory - you crack me up! What happens to the seat all "depends" on how Dad feels, doesn't it? Get it? Depends? BWAHAHHAHAHA!!!!

Got back in town Wednesday night (Gustavus Alaska) and got a bunch of stuff done yesterday. Steve had painted the remaining bits and I got all of them mounted except for the mirrors (that's for today). Steve had also painted the tail lamps with a 50/50 mix of black and clear to give them a wicked smoked look. Then I ran it over to Eclipse Window tinting and had all the windows done.

Next on the agenda, lower the rear with the new belltech springs, put on the mirrors, finish up the weather stripping, adjust the windows, do the interior, install the air conditioning lines... No problem! D-day is 2 weeks and I only have 3 more days out of town!

Come along way, hasn't she?
