Greetings to all;
Recently there has been a lot of discussion about Carburation adjustment...
Im on the process of getting my dual Kadron carbs with the 1776cc to that "Nirvana" of perfect performance, but still have a long way to go...
Well here it goes... theres been a lot written about carb mixture adjustment and different ways to adjust these Solex Kadrons, balancing, but I have not seen any comparison between running them with centrifugal distributor (say Bosch 009) vs. vacuum advance ignition. For the benefit of all and the less experienced
like me, can anyone share their experiences with regards to this
"tap port for vacuum advance" (as advertised by lowbugget)? Any considerable differences experienced?
Would you give up a nice .009 dist with Compufire electronic ignition
for a vacuum advance dist so the Kadrons would perform better in the "midrange"?
Also is anyone outhere regulating the mechanical fuel pump pressure?
Think this is an interesting topic for discussion and thanks for the input - JJ

JJ; that's a great topic and I congratulate you on your posting it. I'm eager to learn about this too since I have a new VS with a 1776 set up with dual Kadrons and I'm a little confused by all the literature and different opinions surrounding them. At this point the engine still needs a bit of tweaking; it's still not working 100% perfectly.
JJ,

Vacuum advance! Hands down!! The BIG winner!!!!

We just switched from an 009 with electronics to an AJ Sims vacuum advance (he drilled and set-up the Kads for us) and the response/performance was way beyond expectations.

It also became much easier to tune/adjust the carbs in relation to the timing and such. Idle was better and stronger, off idle response was immediate and end run quarter mile performance was WAY better. For around town and highway it turned the car into a dream date.

Thanks for the replies guys, I took that approach, Now Ill try to mix the electronic ignition with the vacuum advance distributor, but Im in the same boat as Ricardo, first I still have to get carbs tuned before tweaking into that. Dont want to get too many unknowns into the same equation. Hope to get it right when I get the synchrometer - cheers - JJ
JJ:

I'll be going through all this soon, but with Dellorto's. The Dellorto Tech Book tells us to start with the idle circuit and get that working as good as you can - good, smooth idle, strong and immediate power off-idle and a smooth transition around 3K rpm. This is done by tweaking the accelerator pump jetting and stroke of the pump, and maybe changing the idle jets if you need to.

After you get the idle circuit tuned in, THEN go on to the Main jetting and get that dialed in.

HOWEVER! All of this is far easier if you have an air/fuel mixture gauge to tell you where you are versus perfection. I'm not messing with anything until I get mine from CB (It's on its' way, now) and then I'll start playing. The A/F gauge takes all of the guesswork out of re-jetting, and is accurate enough (even though it is NOT a wide-band model) to get your Kadrons adjusted correctly. They cost around $100 plus shipping and are well worth the money in time not wasted playing with dfferent jets.

Thanks for the replies guys! Nichols Im looking forward to that post about your coming experiences with carb adjustment theres always something to learn. I saw a magazine ad for an A/F ratio meter & analyzer for about $349, but for about a 100 bucks its well worth it... I will be looking towards that direction too... Today I tweaked for a pair of hours with the sychrometer, think I nailed a linkage adjustment problem, idle adjustment and mixture adjustment at about 2k RPM. I dont know how people do all this by ear! It was raining so if sunday is a sun day Ill go for a spin to see how it performs. Ricardo, I called you but got the voice mail BCNU soon... - JJ
JJ; thanks for your help with my car; you nailed the linkage and carb adjustment! It's now running smoother than it ever did. For the rest of you; the carbs are just the stock EMPI set that comes with the VS's; they work fine stock; if you want fire breathing performance you might need jetting, etc. but for regular cruising they work fine.
