I just purchased a speedster with dual Kardon carbs. I haven't heard of these? Normally I've heard people using weber, solex, dellorto, and zeniths.
Does anyone have experience with these, any sites or information out there on these carbs? Are they good?bad?

Thanks,

matt

Matt; the dual Kadron/Solex setup is among the best carb choices for air cooled VW's since they were specifically designed for that use. According to Gene Berg they give you the best bang for your buck. Back in the '60's & '70's they were available in VW dealerships as accessories. Parts are easy to find too; AJ Sims at the www.lowbugget.com website is a recognized authority in them.
The little clips that retain the socket onto the ball heat up, expand and fall off.

When mine went it felt just like the accelerator cable broke, buzzing along at 60 mph then blah, idle and coast to the side. Luckly I found the clip and made it home. This is solved with some back yard repair with some safety wire.

lowbugget.com offers an improved linkage but I havn't seen it in person or know anyone who has one.

When I build a motor this winter I was going to use his or make my own.

Matt,

I think the best bet for a first time VW engined car owner, unfamiliar with a dual carb set-up would be to return the engine to the stock VW configuration and SEND THOSE CARBS AND MANIFOLDS TO ME ! ! !

Yup, just pull them right off and I'll trade you a nice stock set-up to bolt right on.

No fooling around with linkage.
No fussy adjustments.
No loud sucking noise when you really get ON IT.
No power.
No thrills.
No pull.
No nothin'

Just get rid of those nasty ol' Kadrons and send 'em off to TC!
That's the "Evil TC" part of Team Evil writing in the post above. He's found, as I have over the years, that Kadrons are really good, simple carbs that just work well and give little trouble. They especially like engines under 1900 cc's and don't require you to replace the vacuum distributor as other carbs might. The only problem I had was that the linkage I originally had was junk, so I built up a hex-rod linkage very similar to today's CB Performance linkage, but it mounted to the fan shroud. Not great, but light years better than the original.....
