The knob for my engine release cable came off today. In the past, I have pulled the cable out with "grips" and screwed it back on. However, this time the cable slipped back into the cavity.

Any ideas on how to get the cable out so I can put the knob back on? My first instinct was to push it through from the engine compartment...but of course it's locked. I also put my hand under the wheel-well but that doesn't seem to work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll have to jack the rear of the speedster up.

There usually is a bit of bare cable exposed as it comes out of the cable housing at the deck lid latch, you should be able to grab that from under the car or trip the latch with a long screwdriver.
After you get it open and the broken section out of the glassed in cable tube, measure the cable, get a new universal choke cable at most any auto parts store.
Slid the cable out of the new housing it won't be used.
Inset the new cable into the tube adding a few dabs of grease as you go and trim to length.
A little long is better than coming up short on the first trim cut.
I checkin In on Mr Campbell.

I may have had the wrong steel line in mind. It may be a GM brake or fuel line, thats the right size Id just go to a auto parts store and go see what they got . But I know it will work.

PLEASE!

Let me know how it goes.. and if you got it fixed.

I also have a spare aluminum Knob that I didn't use
If you need it Its yours

BUT..If yours is OK Please add a small locknut under the knob and tighen it to the knob well.. that's way better than locktite.
Option one: Remove the grille from the rear deck lid. Unscrew the attaching post that is retaining the deck lid. Should be able to move loosened post around a bit to release it from the clamp inside.

Option two: Remove some of the engine tin from below (one advantage of making your own engine tin).

When you put it all make together, add a secondary "pull" in the left rear fender wheel opening. Good luck.
