Gary: A knock control unit feels for the vibration caused by engine knocking. If it senses knocking it will retard the timing of that cylinder. It is really just a safety thing that allows me to run the timing and compression closer to optimal without risk of damaging anything if I were to get some bad gas or some other conditions changed. Just about all new cars run them.
