The other string got a bit hijacked so I decided to make a new post. The 2007 Association of Handcrafted Automobiles "Knotts" show is on April 28 and 29 (Saturday and Sunday). Usually all of the manufacturers attend with samples of their production. And there are also usually plenty of owners' Speedsters and Spyders on display.

I just booked my room reservation at The Marriott Courtyard at 7621 Beach Boulevard in Buena Park. In the past this is where most of the attendees have stayed. The hotel is about four blocks from the show venue. In the past the Speedster Nuts have had Friday evening refreshments and dinner at The Outback Steakhouse adjacent to the Courtyard By Marriott. Almost everybody shows up on Friday evening. My Courtyard reservation is Friday evening April 27 thru Sunday April 29, AM check-out. The rate for a single king bed is $89.00 plus taxes per night. This rate requires a triple "A" automobile club card at check-in.

I requested a bottom floor room on the "Outback Steakhouse side" of the motel, there are usually several Speedsters in that area of the parking lot (so we can keep an eye on them). The motel said they will try to accomodate room choice based upon avalability at check-in. The toll free number for reservations is: 1 888 236-2427 (for menu selection it's a "Courtyard" property) or you can view the hotel and book on-line at:

Esther,
Its a show. All of us used to go (about 60 strong) to it but many of us experienced somewhat shabby treatment at the show. It is an all makers show (so there's cobras, fake lambos etc). The show also requires the car be on the grounds all day saturday and quite a bit of the day sunday. Here's the deal, most of us (the spyder/speedster group) don't mind a few hours of hanging around looking at the cars but mostly we want to DRIVE. So the Paso event was born. Paso Robles has welcomed us with open arms and provides great roads to drive on both getting there and during the Friday/Sunday of the event. All qualities the Knotts show lacks.

So yes, you can go and show the car or you can just go and visit. Personally, we had sworn off this show as we were definately treated unpleasantly but will attend this year mostly so that Steve and Tom McBurnie can get down to brass tacks regarding our next replica build.

Esther, My son and I went last yeAr and we just parked the tub and walked around for a few hours.. It was fun and I meant some good folk... But you could tell it was limited cause of the SOC Paso event on that same weekend in 06'. A tone of Corba's and stuff but personally I would not spend two days in a Buena Park parking lot... but like we all know here to each their own! ..LOL... Hope all is well with you Hun...

Esther,
without trying to get philosophical, the AHA is a Replica show,
not a traditional car show...If replica's are your thing, this show should blow your skirt up...OR if you like looking at Cobra's, this is the place to be...
I attended in 04 and 05 cause that's where the SOC was, didn't like it much personally, but I'm not a big replica or cobra freak....
and a few acres of ass-fault and no shade or services does not set well with me either.....
BUT with that all said, if your going and wearing a skirt, I just may follow behind....if you get my drift....
If you go Esther, please come say "hi". We'll be parked with Thunder Ranch (Tom McBurnie) and the always affable Bill George. We have the black spyder. I'm easy to spot - I'm the redhead yapping about cars to the guys... Would really love to meet you in person - you're great to talk on line!

If it's at all possible, it would be great if you & Steve came down to the Cars & Coffee meet Saturday morning before you go to Knott's. I guarantee you both will enjoy seeing all the cars that show up (euro-exotic to Detroit iron). I've often put a link to pictures from that event on these threads.

Depending on where you have lodging (close to Knott's?), its probably a 20-minute drive south on the 405 Fwy (in Irvine). The crowd shows up before 07:00, exhibit area of 400 spaces gets filled quickly and the place starts to empty around 8:30. Afterwards cruise back to Knott's for the rest of the day (in a parkig lot).

Here's a thought - depending on how late you're at Knott's maybe you two would be interested in hooking up with a few of the other SoCal SOC'ers and getting in a short cruise (coastline)?

Anyway, we'll see you guys in Paso this weekend!
Jim,
I told Steve about the Cars and Coffee-Irvine thing and he would definately like to go. So we'll run down there Saturday morning. Do you have the address? I "think" the address is 7905 Gateway Blvd in Irvine...

Hey, if Steve plays his cards right, I might even let him drive his car!

If you're lodging near Knott's, the easiest route would be;

1. Beach Blvd. north to 91 Fwy (approx. 1 mile north of Knott's)
2. 91 Fwy east to I-5 south (approx 2 miles)
3. I-5 south to Orange County/Irvine (approx 20 miles)
4. Exit Alton (this exit is after you've passed the 133 junction)
5. After taking Alton exit turn Right onto Gateway Blvd
6. Cars & Coffee event is in the area of the Ford/Mazda buildings (visible from I-5 as you approach Alton)
7. Pull into second driveway on right (exhibitor entrance)

Your drive time to the event (at this time of morning) should be about 20 minutes (but well worth the drive).

I will be at this event by 07:00. Sent you PM for additional info.
CRZNTUB will be at Knott's on Saturday (only). Been doing the one day thing since John delivered the JPS to me at the show in 2001. So I don't get judged for a trophy - like I really care? Maybe other attendees could stick a "SOC" sign on their cars, with their name on it?

Sunday is Coronado (San Diego). They'l have an original 1912 Rolls Royce next to a '32 Ford flat head hiboy. And a blown, supercharged '63 Falcon next to an original Mercedes gullwing. And everything that fits in between. Best eclectic mix of automobiles of any show. It's free to view.

Esther, Coronado is a really great show. Sunday, April 29, 10 to 3 p.m. Easy to find. From Carlsbad, straignt done I-5 , over the bridge (Hwy 75) to Coronado. Follow 75, left on Orange Avenue (75)and you drive right past it. Basically, across the street from the Hotel Del. Easy parking on side streets. Free to view. Several restaurants within easy walk. Walk to beach after. they usually have book fairs and other "native" stuff down the street a few blocks.
Esther - I'll be at Cornado pretty early (have to leave early too). How about 11 a.m. at the deli opposite the grandstand? It's near the porti-potties (important to know) and they have some outdoor tables in the area. I'll probably have on a well soiled stetson-like Austrailian bush hat. Look forward to meeting you there.
It looks like it will be clear and in the mid-80's in Buena Park over the week-end, so it should be a great event weather wise.

For those who've never attended Knotts, the Association of Handcrafted Automobiles usually seperate the air-cooled based replicas from the Lambo's and the Cobras, so you don't have to wade through them to see Speedsters and Spyders. Most of the replica manufactureres, and some aftermarket retro-fitters are in attendance showing their latest renditions and improvements.

Gabe -

I'm meeting Angela & Steve at the Cars & Coffee meet early Saturday morning in Irvine (by the Spectrum). They will probably be heading back to Knott's around 08:00am. I won't be able to make Knott's.

Depending on where in Irvine you have to be Saturday morning (and what time), maybe you can join us Saturday morning and check out some crazy awesome cars before going to the trade show! The car meet usually starts to empty around 08:30-09:00.
