What did I miss? My brother and I have planned to attend the Knott's show for a few months. We arrived at 0900 hrs. and were surprised to find very few cars.

We hung around until 1030 and then, disappointed, we called it quits. HUGH disappointment. Thunder Ranch was there, no other Speedsters in sight. Vintage Spyders were there; nice, but not why we came.

I thought this was THE BIG event. So ... now I am worried.

My brother is a hot rodder. Builds professionally. I am a Porsche nut, have owned several. We expected to find Speedster enthusiats at this event, like we would at a hot rod show or a Porsche AutoX or whatever.

The question I am throwing out there is ... where are the Speedster-dudes meeting in SoCal? Where do these owners hang out to look at each othger stuff and socialize or do they?

I was hoping these cars would be our coming together thing. My brother's never been too big on Porsches, I've never been too big on hot rods. But, looking at the JPS and Thunder Ranch websites, talking to the owner at Vintage Speedsters, this looked like a fun/social thing to do, he was building one way and I was building another. Then we could meet at "events" and hang with the "like-minded."

What events? Where are you guys? There was alot of repop crap at Snott's, where are the Speedster guys who take time and pride in building their machines?

My hope is fading. HELP?

Chris
Chris -

The 2005 Knott's repro show was the last time the Speedster group attended enmass. Reason was as Bruce stated, sitting all day on a blacktop parking lot was a turnoff - SOCers want to DRIVE!

Since then the SOC Paso Robles meet has become the mecca for West Coast SOCers. Park-like setting surrounded by 2-lane country roads and wineries. Lot's of opportunity to meet, greet and drive with other like-minded Porschephiles.

The other big SOC event is coming up in May in Carlisle, PA. This is another large gathering of SOCers (as welll as other kit mfgs).

If you are in the SoCal Orange County area, the only other event that would scratch both you & your brothers car itch would be the Cars & Coffee meet that happens every Saturday in Irvine. I've attached a link for that as well as a pic from the recent SOC Paso Robles meet.

KNOTT'S UPDATE: You're right it was warm and sunny after the coastal haze burned off, I don't mind it though - that's why I live in Southern CA!

It's a shame more vendors didn't come to Knott's this year, I believe competition improves the product. There were a lot of prospective buyers who came by to chat with me and they asked a lot of good questions. A couple of them mentioned that they knew about Paso Robles, but decided to go to Knott's instead of Paso because they figured that with three manufacturers within 80 miles of Knott's, and no scheduling conflict between the two events, they would have a good sampling of what was available when they attended Knotts. A couple of other prospective buyers (from out of state) mentioned they had seriously considered going to Paso, but when they tried to get accommodations none were available. They said that they had also discovered that travel time and the cost of air-fare to anywhere close to Paso made Knott's an easy choice. Some of them asked me if the vendors went to Paso. I said I didn't know because I cancelled my reservations when I saw the weather report for storms stretching from San Jose to San Diego on both travel days. But, I told them I didn't think the vendors would have gone up there because most of the people going to Paso already owned a Speedster or a Spyder, and wouldn't be easily influenced about their next purchase because they were already knowledgeable, and in some cases somewhat opinionated.

Anyhow I hope there is no scheduling conflict next year, I'd love to do both events - weather permitting.
Bill....Your presents at Paso would have been enjoyed by many I'm sure and it is a bit far for the So.Cal. bunch who don't like driving through the beauty of the central coast especially in the rain, Paso is more for the SOC or speedster community to get together and have some fun....I think we accomplished that....
I personally could care less about the vendors, let them go to Knotts and those who prefer the vendors know where they can go...
(I mean that in a good way)...
Knott's was a definite disappointment, and not just this year. In my opinion, it's been on decline for several years now. I've attended most shows since mid-80s. Maybe I'm just gettin bored? Any way, 60 Cobras just don't do it for me, never did. I did have some great conversations with individual private builders of the "other" makes, includng some truly innovative original designs. They are not there to sell anything. They are just sharing their craftsmanship and ideas with whoever is interested. It's those few original owners / thinkers that keep me coming back each year.

The "sorta Mini Cooper" with the Honda VTECH in the back seat.
The Cheetah body with a home built frame and 20 inch engine set-back behind the front axle.
The original Manta that he's owned for 30 years, and covered in dirt.
The new LaBala with rear-engine Toyota drivetrain.
Jim Machoud's V-Twin three wheeler trike, that isn't a chopper.

Good stuff Clyde!
Turned out that the reason AHA changed the date of their show had nothing to do with our exodus last year. The FORD crowd made their "date" earlier and got the parking lot during the same weekend we were all up in Paso Robles effectively "bumping" AHA to the last weekend in April.

I got to meet several people from this site and the spyder site that were new-to-face. Including Richard Lamin, a spyder driver from England! Also got to meet Greg from Vintage spyder/speedster. Delightful fellow, who brought his terrific subaru powered spyder. Nice!

Dang, that's a COOL car! How the hell did I miss that? I sat there bs'ing at the mendeola booth for probably 20 minutes and that car is right where I was standing! That's it, I definately need glasses... I mean for heavens sake it's ORANGE!!

I checked out their website. If you're handy with a welder, you can save a HUGE amount of money by building the frame yourself from their directions.

One question: If this was the 2007 Editor's Choice Car, why's the trophy sitting at my house? Hmmm... Maybe Kit Car vs Kit Car Builder?
