Oh wait - its MANNER! Ha, that's funny, I used the wrong synonym. Wish this event were a little more geographically friendly for us. In spite of all my personal trash talk about British cars (which I've earned having used one as a daily driver for five years), I still love them. Primarily Jaguars. Drool....Drool...

VInce, here is some info on the La Jolla Motor Car Classic (please hum background music to "Your Social Security in Action", for best effect)

This FREE event will include remarkable British exotics dating from pre-1972 such as luxurious Aston Martins, hip and fun Mini Coopers, sleek Jaguars as well as other marques from around the globe. British-inspired entertainment alongside La Jolla's finest eateries and shops make this the perfect way to spend the day.

Registration now open for the La Jolla Motor Car Classic at La Jolla Cove.
Date and Time:

Sun Jan 14, 2007 from 11:00 am
In spite of my lack of motor skills, (get it?)I am still a long time "car guy" I have been a Concours judge for over 20 years, I used to know "originality" pretty gud....I can still be fair and lead my group regardless of class (car class, that is)
Funny thing is, I still can't bring my Replica to a judging event, the other judges would probably run me out of town....
Concours people are funny that way....
How unlike you Vince! I would have thought you'd bring the car to the show and display it by the judge's table just to PO off the guys who are using tweezers to pick the grass out of the tire treads of their trailer queens!

Oh, wait, British. That would be "tyre" treads... Hey, want to really wind a few clocks? Use your replica to give their car a jump start when their battery fails. Yeah...that's FUN!

Vince, I'll see you at the show (unless it rains). Last year was the first show and it was pretty good. Terrific setting, not much different than Pebble Beach except for the clothing (everything from beach baggies to Park Avenue). Big green lawn perched on a small cliff fifty feet above the ocean, good restaurants a few blocks away. Good coastal walk. La Jolla cove for swimmers. I live about $3,000,000 east of La Jolla (translation - about three miles inland).

My speedster will be street parked. It's eaten a few rock chips and it's a go-er, not a show-er.
You wanta see real grass roots car shows, go to south coast Oregon. Nearest freeway over an hours drive away from these towns. Rat rods with REAL rust, not new steel with air-brush bullet holes painted on.
a high-end rod is a '52 Chevy with a Nova front clip and a garage-painted color scheme. Passion and enthusiasm - priceless!

At La Jolla, I am expecting some/most of the show cars to be valued at over $250,000. It's a good show, just not my crowd.

Vince, for about 20 years I used to ride my Honda to La Jolla cove about 3 times a week to go swimming after work. Parking was the big advantage. I'll look you up.
I'll plan on coming to the show in my Speedster. With the crowds down at La Jolla, it will probably be the only thing that will fit! Sounds like most of you are coming from the north. I'll be coming from the east. Is there a common point we can meet/park at? I don't think I can get there until around noon/noon-thirty. Jim Warren
Jim,
The show apparantly starts at 11 a.m. By then, you won't be able to buy a parking spot anywhere near the cove. There is no parking lot, only street parking. Your only choice would be to cruise until you score someone leaving. I'll probably be there by 9:00 and watch the participants drive in.

There are a couple of good "motorcyle triangles" buried in the angle parking as you descend Cave Street. I may do that myself. Don't know if you are into that or not.

Would love to meet up and see your wheels. By your arrival time, I assume you are not a show participant either. Contact me of line to arrange something.

Judges need to be there at 7:00 we are fed and then usually help placing the cars to be sure each class stays together.....
Judging starts at 9:00..........so I am sure they start placing cars by 8:00.......
I have never judged this event, but I am told it is pretty cool...
I have done Palm Springs, Deer Park, Sea Port Village, and a few other spots around So. Cal. but never La Jolla....
So I saw David K at this event and that was it.....
I gotta say there were some spectacular cars there....
La Jolla cove is about as scenic as it gets along the So. Cal coast
perfect setting for a car show.....
Froze my ass off at 6:00 AM on the Harley getting there from the hotel....not used to cold weather in So Cal...or maybe I'm turning into a Pussy........
Esther, where were you?????
Best of show was a Rolls Royce from the 20's, special award went to a Delahey (sp) that was actually perfect except it had an ostrich interior (modified) but looked great....
there were a high number of 90 point cars in attendance..
I judged 50's cars both american and foreign, (except sports) and 1st place went to a 53 split window VW that was actually over restored with lots of options from the era....I took 2 points off for having an oil guage that was not an option (very modern) but it was a 98 point car.....and not trailered.....
Lots of Jags, Aston Martins, RR, a few Lambo's and Ferarri's....
they also had a 53 Desoto concept car (looked like Flash Gordon stuff) in extremely nice condition with a Hemi of course.........
Very cool show......
The 53 VW was dark green and it was perfect.....I say "over restored"
because I don't think it's possible it looked that good when it was new.....Skirts, luggage rack, german auto club badge, it had everything.....When judging, if it was an option, and its on the car,
then you judge it along with everything, Chrome, glass, finish, etc. as I said, I did dock him a few points for an oil guage that was obviously to modern for the car, but it didn't matter it easily won its class.....
I can not remember the guys name but he lives in Orange County somewhere.....AND, he drove it to the show and home again, NO trailer queen........I passed him on the 5 freeway going home...
Vince / Patrick;

I'm guessing this might be the VW you're talking about. I see this car regularly at the Cars & Coffee meet (formerly Crystal Cove).

this car looks great in person. Vince, if this is the car you saw, you're right that its a nice car but over-done. Some poeple just don't know when to stop when it comes to accessorizing their cars.

Peace - Out!
