This is one of my favorite drives. Also known as Dale and Terry's excellent adventure.
It's approximately 210 miles. Drive time is around 5 hours.
It'll be set up as a progressive loop where you can jump in or out anywhere along the route's meeting points.
The drive will start in Placerville, along highway 49 and into Auburn. Through the backroads of Grass Valley, up Highway 20 to Historic 40.
We'll go over Donner Pass, into Truckee, along 89 to Tahoe City. We'll stop at Sunnyside for lunch (fried zucchini!). Then continue on 89 past Emerald Bay to South Shore and back down to Placerville via Highway 50.
Dale and I were thinking a Sunday in July? After the July fourth weekend, of course.
So, any of you NorCal people up for this?
I promise I'll drive nice...

Bob,
You can Start at your house, I can start by mine.
There will be a few drop in/out points along the drive. You'll probably drop off when we hit Placerville on the return. I'll continue to Grass Valley.
Bring your speedster or your other car, it doesn't matter.
Well, it'll be more fun in the speedster. ;)
BTW those Webers would be fine if you sent them to Art Thraen for a rebuild.
Dave, I forgot the IM BBQ was that weekend. The date for this is flexible.
Throw out some dates people!
Terry

If it works for everyone else, I could do June 20 or 27. Otherwise, we're not available until the first of Aug. We so want to do this!!

Nice and brisk, I hope. Maybe not if we're doing scenery. Anyway, looking forward to the drive.

By the way, what is the gas availability on that route?
Hwy 40 is a quiet drive along the Yuba river as it parallels I-80 for a short distance. We will cross I-80 and then drive HWY 40 down a very winding Donner Pass. There is a great place to stop and enjoy the view of the Sierra and Donner Lake. This road is closed during the winter as it is impossible to plow.

There is a short section of the route as we pass Emerald Bay (Lake Tahoe) that is a two lane road with drop-offs on both sides of the road.

Gorgeous!
if anyone coming in from afar wants to start in placerville there is a decent hotel next exit up from me with a KILLER mexican restaurant right next door.
if someone is concerned about their car they can park it here and i can ferry people in my quadcab truck. i live on 1 acre and cant even see my neighbors, safe and sound.
Great news, Mr. Leader!
It's so cool that we have some Central/SoCal folks coming up.
Hopefully there'll be more NorCal people.
I'll be happy to make some recommendations for lodging in the foothills and Tahoe areas for those who want to stay for the weekend.
We might have to make different arrangements for lunch if we get too many participating, unless you don't mind eating in shifts. Sunnyside doesn't take reservations for eating on the deck.
I'm trying to establish a map that I can link to but Google maps is giving me attitude.
I should have something in the next couple days.

Again, some of the highlights:
Drive through Coloma and Cool
Breathtaking view of the Foresthill Bridge
Pastoral drive through Grass Valley
Up Hwy 20 through Tahoe National Forest
Hwy 40 through Donner Summit
Truckee, Tahoe City
Fanny Bridge
Sunnyside (did I mention fried zucchini?)
Emerald Bay
Some of the best, scenic roads in the world!
