I have a 2013 vintage speedster on a 1958 or 59 VW from Hawaiian Gardens with a small capacity fuel tank may be 10 gallons ? and I would like to up grade to a larger capacity. stainless would be nice, but what are my options. Thanks

CIP1 has a 12.5 gallon for $170 with no shipping charge
ACC-C10-2510 - (113201075 113-201-075 95-2004-B) 12.5 GALLON GAS TANK (UNDER HOOD FILLER STYLE) - STANDARD BEETLE 61-77/GHIA 61-74

I doubt a spare tire will fit with it. Be sure to get their gas cap as it is not std. I was able to fit in a CMC without cutting the inner trunk liner or the gas filler tube.
Do you have to change the sending unit for the gauge?
I second Wolfgans's report. Just put it in my CMC without issue. The stock sender works fine. I use a Speedhut gas gauge and it works great without a lot of needle wobble.
Cory's tank is NOT 5 gallons. I believe it is a black polyethylene fuel cell and at least 10 gallons. It is also custom-mounted as there is no fiberglass inner trunk.
His car is so different from any other Speedster or Spyder for that matter that comparison is not an option.
I have wondered if it is possible to expand the stock tank on the bottom on the passenger side.
The high capacity one is from Brazil (t least mine from years ago). It is a strange stamping of the 2 metal halves with strange wrinkles in the metal where they are welded together. I don't think the metal is as thick as the OEM one was. I guess a few more gallons could be added but would also take moving the fuel pickup too. I guess it would be a good opportunity to add anti-slosh panels. Moding the top to appear square would make it look like the OEM Porsche gas tank. As few miles as folks put on their weekend cars - that's a long time to store ethanol gas. It goes bad in 30 days.

What about useing a GT Tank as per the original 356’s. Holds 80ltr’s, don’t know of hand what that is in US gallons?
80L is over 21 gallons.
3.8L is one American Gallon... 4.54 Liter is one Imperial Gallon.
so Wolf is right 80L is close to 21.052631578947368 Gal

Because under the hood is a different configuration from an original 356, I don't know if there's enough room for a tank that big. There is a bigger aftermarket type 1 tank made (12.5 gal- doesn't say whether it's US or Imp gal?) sold by a number of parts places that I believe will fit. Al
These are tanks that l make for the Uk Speedster/Coupes. They hold 75ltrs and fit straight in. Filler can be through the bonnet or under for a more discreet look.
A real GT should fit also but would need the boot floor to be re-glassed.

Oh, wow! That's real nice.
Would one of those fit in a Spyder????? Even if I had to cut some fiber glass.
If honest Carlos, l have no idea.
I probably couldn't afford it anyway. They do look fabulous though.
When ever I show people my car, I avoid popping the front hood because the gas tank area looks so cheesy. I need to do something about that.
Watch this space Carlos.
I may need a moment.
So. Freaking. Cool.
Gotta ask-- how much? You know... for your old buddy Uncle Stan.
@edsnova, great name for the build website!
What is the cost?
C'mon, Stan. As you just said, quit thinking about spending money on that tupperware car...

Great looking piece, but I know what Stan is thinking.
75 liters (20 US gallons).
At 25 mpg, that's 500 miles. With a big enough bag of beef jerky and one of those, uh, personal relief bottles that pilots use, you could burn the road from dawn to dusk with just one stop.

I agree, Stan; it is a beauty...
Stan, you'll have to wait till the world turns over for an answer
I wonder what the measurements are of those tanks and of course the cost

Admittedly, that is one beautiful gas tank. You would have to put a clear plexiglass frunk lid on your car, though. Or stop for a refill every chance you get.
A man with a tank that nice would need to show it off as much as possible...
I wonder how the extra weight changes handling. It is a work of art @RichardMaxwell

Speedsters are light in the front, so the more weight over the front wheels the better the handling will be. Some dedicated VW slalom racers actually add weight so the front tires will stick better and the front end doesn't slide as much. Throw 40 lbs in the front of your car- it will change the front/rear weight bias over 2% and feel more sure-footed.
PS- you may have to re-adjust front ride height for full benefits.
Another PS-

The only downside I can see is that with enough fuel to travel for 4+ hours at a time you'd still need to stop every 2 hours or so to get out and stretch. I can't imagine it being too easy to climb out of the car after sitting (especially in Speedster seats) for that long! I think most of us are just too old for that.

Every time I read that I regret I have but 1 like for that comment. I so hear where you're coming from, Stan!
Hi Guys, firstly, thanks for the positive comments. Here’s the tank installed.
I only do these to order and they come in at £1200. I’m sure you guys must have alternative offerings your side of the pond.
The handling side of things as ALB has mentioned can only be a bonus with the extra weight up front. The big plus for me is, when on a road trip your not counting the miles and forever looking out for gas/petrol stops to top or fill up.

I am sure somebody must be able to make one...
if Maxwell's hammer could provide dimensions for us, even just the outside dimensions or I guess we could simply measure our areas and see what the average guy has on his vehicle and we would be able to draw something up that we would all be able to buy in to. Any takers?
@RichardMaxwell- What does the bottom look like? Is it similar to a stock tank (making the most of the space down low) or relatively flat? Do you have a pic?
Tank picts and Link CLick on the pict and see 10 picts of the tank different views.

While the tank above holds 80L , did you know that the original 356A tank the big square one holds 50L. Just saying, that if you could use this one your further down the road and a less expensive entry fee.
Link to guess who ? You should see the tanks here... quite amazing.
@ALB Hey do you remember this one...
ALB posted:The pics were in my computer, @IaM-Ray; I had stolen them off the Web and were saving them for reference. They sure do look familiar...
ALB the pic’s you have in your computer of the tank/bottom is the same tank above. I’m the same guy also 😉.
Yeah, I had figured that out, Richard. I originally saved the pics as this was the way to do a larger Speedster tank. I loved that you made it look like a GT unit. The way the computer saves them there's no room for a lot of info so before this conversation (and the pics above) I didn't know who had built it. You do nice work. Al
PS- I especially liked the tank baffling pic; as I said, you did it right!

Yes very nice work for sure.
