I'm about to order the larger gas tank. I read the earlier thread, but want to make double sure that I've got this right before I order it.

1. In a standard replica (Vintage) what mods will I make to the tank? Is it just a corner that is hitting and needs some ball peen engineering, or is any cutting required to the tank or car?

2. What about the fuel guage sending unit??????? Excuse my ignorance, because I haven't the experience on VWs, so here's the rookie Q... Is it a floating type guage? And it will work with the larger tank?

3. How are most of you filtering your lines? An inline from tank to firewall? And another before the T for Duals, or one on each line after the split? What kind of quality fuel filters are you using?

4. Has anyone here hardlined their fuel system on a JPS or Vintage?

5. Hoses? What is the best soft hose for this application? Clamps?

Thanks for any tips offered! Jim OKC (Doghouse)

If you want a set of stainless steel lines, I have a guy with a setup for dual dells or webers. Make sure your carbs are tapped to take the screw in inlets. We can talk.

I'd go hard line from the front to the back of the pan, and go ahead and step up one size... That way you are covered if you ever go 2.4. I'd put a filter up under the tank. I don't think you need a high pressure set up, so I don't even know that I'd go stainless steel. It is low maintenance, but properly maintained just top of the line braided rubber hose in all that's necessary. I would be careful where the line goes through the doghouse. There are many sites that explain how to minimize the risk that it will wear through. For a 2 liter engine you're 4 lbs of fuel pressure will work.
Four psi fuel pressure is a little on the high side for Webers and Dellortos; most VW performance engines try run around 3.5 psi. You won't need high volume fuel feed unless you're going to run a performance turbo engine; many 2,276cc and 2332cc normally aspirated performance engines use the stock VW fuel pump.
1. Mine and others I've seen only need the cutout inside the hood liner for the filler on the right side.

2. Sender should work but you may have to customize the arm length to get more-or-less correct readings.

3. Filter up front; if using an electric pump filter should be downstream from pump.

4. Use supoorted hardline only up to the engine; some racers use S/S teflon lined flex line from there on.

5. CB Performance and other distributors sell rubber "fuel injection" gas line - use clamps on all joints and replace any plastic "T" fittings with metal ones.

NOTE: Some 1/4 mile race sanctioning bodies will not allow cars with more than 12" of rubber fuel line to pas through tech inspection.

Thanks guys,

Jack, I'll p-mail you about those lines, sounds interesting! George, thanks for the info.... on the filler neck, re: fitment on hood, are folks using a dremel tool to cut a section of the inner hood? Is that what causes the issue, or can it be resolved by reducing the neck at a local welding shop?

Jim
