While at the NCKKC show last weekend I was informed that my fuel pump was leaking a little and seemed to be coming from around the diaphragm (wow thats a tuff word to spell). Are there rebuild kits available for these things or must I buy a new fuel pump. Dont ask what kind of pump as all I can tell from looking at it is that it was made in Canada.
Thanks

The generators were smaller in diameter then the alternators, and hence the fuel pumps were taller (why? Because they could be!). When VW went to the alternator a shorter pump to clear the larger diameter alternator was in order. After a year or two (I think), they introduced the angled pump and shorter push rod. The Bakelite base also changed. Enough history, it just serves to confuse. I am pretty sure you have an angled fuel pump. Just asked for a later year (74 maybe) pump and match it up. It should be just fine. When re-installing make sure you either take a picture, write it down, or some how memorialize which is the "in" hose connection and which is the "out" connection from the pump. Trust me...you will forget and then get angry. Also don't tighten the bolts down to much. Those bakelite bases can get a little brittle with time. Forgot to look where you are but any Autozone or Parts America will carry them, and usually in stock.
Sorry....bored at work.

If you want to verify what you have just measure the pushrod. It's either 4" or 4 1/4"....I'll bet 4".

Wow thanks. I'm in the SF bay area of calif. We have place here called the Buggy House and they have this stuff. I may just drive the car there tomorrow and have them look at the pump as none of the pumps you list are the one I have. Mine has a series of bolts holding the top and bottom of the pump together and that is why I assumed there was most likely a rebuild kit available. I guess this also means I have a non-stock pump. I'll take a picture tonight and post it.
Troy,

You have a normal 1600cc type 1 style fuel pump. Don't buy a rebuild kit just replace it.

Two nuts pull it off. grease up the inside where the pin rides. You may what to put new gaskets on the case side of the plate and between the pump and the plate. Be careful you don't break the stand the pump sits on.

Put new hose clamps if needed and new hose if needed.

It is an easier job than the exhuast.
