I'm leaking oil at the crank seal. Is this because there is pressure build up in the motor and it has to come out somewhere, or just that the seal is bad? The motor is fresh, with less than 300 miles on it (pistons and cylinders have 5,000 miles on them). Of course, the spinning crank pulley flings the a bit of the oil around...what a mess.

Ron,
Here's the deal- unless you have a sand-seal, you don't HAVE an oil seal. Youve got a "slinger" and a groove cut in your crank pully. You're gonna get a lot of opinions on this- here's mine. I had the same oil leak problem on both speedsters I've had, both were fresh 1776's when I bought them. When oil comes out from the crank pully- it gets everywhere. I know you've got a good breather set-up which everybody is going to tell you to get right. George is gonna hate this, but I put a Scat sand-seal pully on both cars with very good results. Yes, the pully flange is thinned out- but I have a hard time beleiving the whole thing is going to blow apart with a 5500 rpm redline. So far, so good. Also- check your oil level. It sounds stupid, but if you are ANY past the full mark on the dip-stick, you're gonna get oil out the crank seal, no matter what you have. I'm running mine at mid-point between the marks, and with the seal I've elminated the problem. And here come the fireworks...
Turns out the oil was NOT coming from the crank pulley. I pulled the pulley off and there was not enough oil for the leak to be coming from the back of the pulley. Pulled the generator stand and noticed a small bit of oil dribbling from one corner...that's where the leak was coming from. Put in new gaskets and gasket sealer...hopefully this will solve my leaking problem.
I have had the oil leak from the crank pulley when I put on the deep sump and filled my motor with oil up to the top line on the dip stick. Went for a drive and blew oil everywhere. I learned my lesson...never fill to the top with a deep sump installed (too much of a good think).
Ron
