Not me....My Beaufort weather is pretty much like that in San Diego - actually nicer here in the Fall.

Now if I could only get my folks and kids to move to Beaufort......

I have a picture on my Fridge in Beaufort - it shows me up to my ass in snow with a snow blower that just clogged up. I look at it whenever I think New England could be nice and it brings me to my senses.

Of course, it's been over 90 in Beaufort for over a month ( 90+% humidity, too), and won't drop below 80-90 until September, even at night. It's been in the 60's and 70's in Massachusetts and only gets into the 80's during the one week of Summer, between July 15'th and July 22'nd.

BTW, Larry: Thank Heavens after my daughter's Land Rover skidded on Black Ice last Winter and was totalled against a utility pole (My grandson told me on the phone; "We went THIS way, and then THAT way, and then, BANG!) Fortunately, because a LR is so damn tough, no one was hurt and she finally got out from under a 10mpg (on a good day) "car" and into a 33mpg Subaru, which she can now afford.
My speedster is still down and I haven't really missed it much. I kid you not when I say it has rained here 5-6 days a week for the past month. I don't remember a crappier summer in all my life. The upside there's still 3-4 months of good driving weather once this crap blows through. And if all goes right, I'll be driving a 911 with in the next week or so. :)

They have a wet bulb here, a dry bulb and a plain old thermometer. None agrees. All read over 110, with a 30-degree variance for what it actually feels like.
Snow? Yeah ... No.
AND, bonus, I'll be leaving this joint in November, heading back to the mid-Atlantic just in time for winter.

Jeez H C!!!! You'd think it would be a little easier to find a decent mid 80's 911 within a 100 miles of you, but it's NOT!
I have been looking and looking and looking but I can't seem to find anything worth it's weight. I have one more 83 SC to see on sunday morning and then it's on to moving up the money to year ratio into the 87,88,89 range.
There is an 87 on Long Island that looks promising and I found another one in Miami but I was hoping to keep it a little more local. However, I DID have to fly to FLA to get me Speedster and that worked out to be one of the funner things I've done so maybe a black on tan 87 911 in Coral Cables isn't such a bad thing.
Any of you East Coasters run across anything let me know will ya!
It could be worse. You could live in Louisiana. When I still owned my cars there may have been 4-6 other 911s around here.

In your search for a more modern P car have you considered a Boxster?

In my opinion it is one of the best modern sports car values. A direct descendant of the Spyder, Speedster, 356, 912, 911, 914 etc. In fact it handles so well that many people think that Porsche keeps a smaller engine in it so it does not compete with the modern 911.

For fun one day I went to a Porsche dealer and test drove a Boxster and a Cayman. The sales guy was an auto crosser and he talked me through the test drives and showed me what the cars can do. One 180 degree hwy on ramp blew my mind, I would never have pushed the corners that hard by myself and it hinted at what this sports car is capable of. Very impressive! For me the mid engine is a real plus, used to own a 914 which I loved.

I suspect your price range would enable you to get into one of these gems. A plus is it looks very much like a modern speedster to me. Check out the profile compared to the your speedster. I will most likely get one some day for Chrissa and myself as a second car and weekend driver when I can afford it.

I could get a killer deal on a Boxster right now but I need back seats. I have two little ones and even though the back seats aren't much as far as room, there's enough to fit their car seats back there and their little legs don't need much room.

It's the 87 Carrera with 16K on the rebuild. Blk w/tan.

I looked at a really nice 83 SC today. All the updates, 1st and 2nd redone, and a bunch of other stuff (I'll get more details from the mechanic tomorrow). Only issues we're small rust bumps under the rubber door sill covers, needs rear rotors and pads, and the AC is shot (not that they're any good in those cars anyway) I think he's a little "hopeful" price-wise. If he decides to come down some I'd seriously but that car in a second.

However, now this 87 Carrera pops up for about the same money but it's in Fla. The way I look at it, a trip to Fla is likely worth 45 more hp, G50 trans and Motronic FI, besides he said he'd cover my flight if when I got there I bought it. I talked to the guy today and I got a copy of the engine work receipt, it looks like he's being reasonable price-wise.
Looks like a nice car. Who did the rebuild? Top-end only, or did they split the case? Valve guides? Studs? Rod bolts? Mods to the injection or intake? Compression & leakdown numbers? You will get more HP with a 3.2, but the G50 is considerably heavier than a 915. Every generation of these cars had their issues, so the available paperwork is a very good thing.
That looks like a nice car, Mickey. I too would have questions regarding the bottom end rebuild. Not uncommon for Porsche people to refer to a "bottom end" rebuild as headstuds (which were replaced) and rings (not mentioned) but the case remains unsplit, so bearings are not addressed. A bottom end rebuild should include the bearings. I wouldn't have heart ache if didn't as long as the rest of the build was good quality/documented. At this point, it would have definately been time for a top-end rebuild on a 3.2.

Love the color and the working (haha) a/c. If it blows cold by "porsche standards" on a dark car in Florida though, it probably is pretty decent.

All in all, this "looks" like a decent car. Do your homework to confirm, but it does look very decent. All other things considered, I would pass on a 3.0 for this 3.2 at near the same price. This car will be nicer to drive, easier to troubleshoot mechanically, makes more horse power and will have a higher long term resale value.

Anyway, Thanks Angela and Shuie. I loaded the paperwork on the rebuild. It was done in Nov 06 at 142K miles (16K miles ago). Studs were done but I don't see anything about rings, bearings, etc... being done so I guess they didn't go inside. It was done at European Auto Center in Miami, FL. It looks like the clutch kit was a replacement of the rubber center clutch and not the spring upgrade.

I was thinking of offering the other guy with the 83 SC $15500 contingent on a PPI. I figure I can do the rear rotors and pads for about $300 and do the AC upgrade down the road if I just can't stand not having it. He has EVERY single piece of paperwork for everything that was done to the car. I was going to call the shop that did the work tomorrow and see what they can tell me about it.

As fun as this is, I still don't get why it's so hard to find "the one". Especially when I'm not being really picky about the asthetics. I know it'll happen, but I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve. The kicker is I have my toaster sold already but the person buying it can't wait much longer, her car died friday afternoon and she needs a car ASAP. If I had my speedster up it'd be OK cuz I could drive that but it's still light in the rear ;). I know I can find another buyer for the toaster but it sure would be nice if it all came together in the next few days.
That's a top-end with head studs and a clutch. About what I would expect at that mileage, Mickey. Probably run another 125,000 to 150,000 before the next top-end without cracking the case.

The valve job was a $600 sublet with the springs on this bill.

The 87 versus the 83 at the same price? 87 hands down.

I'd talk to the shop or ask the owner if there was any evidence of overrev when they took the top-end down. Most likely there wasn't since they would have gone in and did the rod bolts, but it's a question I would ask. I probably missed it, but I also don't see the valve guides or any machine shop work (removing & installing guides) broken out on the receipts, only the springs. Valve guides and rod bolts are points of concern on a 3.2. Ask about the guides also. They should have been replaced on a 100k+ mile 3.2 by default.

I recognize the name on the receipt. I forget his moniker there, but he is a Pelican member. I'd go back and search his old posts at Pelican. Every mod that was ever done to my last 911 was documented well at Pelican..

What about the condition of the turbo? A lot of people don't know how to take care of the puffer. After the machine has been out on the road, most just turn her off. The blower should be allowed to cool down at least a minute or 2 then shut down the engine. Those things can cook themselves fairly easy. Just a thought!

Slow down and don't stress out. Take your time and find a straight documented car with paperwork and that is in order. Get the PPI after that.

155k on an SC motor wouldn't scare me as long as it didn't have any broken studs and the compression & leakdown numbers check out on a PPI. Every generation of these cars had issues, but all other things being equal, the SC engines were very robust. Slighty down on power from a 3.2, but a little quicker revving, and very stout. The car's are slightly lighter, too.

The documentation on a gearbox rebuild is important as it is on an engine rebuild. Add nothing to the price if it isn't available. FWIW, I had more money in the 915 gearbox than I did in the 3.2 in my last 911.

IMO, there are plenty of knowledgeable folks here, but you also really need to register and post on Pelican if you need 911 help. I could not have owned my 911's without the help I received from that BBS.

There is an 88 with 122K on it but NO RECORDS whatsoever, which is really scary. I have the place selling it trying to get in touch with the previous owner to see if there is anything that he can offer in terms of past service (shop name, reciepts, etc...). It's body and interior is super clean but I didn't feel like it had the same "grunt" the 83 had. The wire covers were cracking from age, etc... just not a good vibe, but records would help for sure.

I've been up to about 1-2am almost every night for the past few weeks pouring over the Pelican. It's sooooo much help, just like this forum. I've posted a few times and gotten excellent responses.

As it is with all used cars, you do your best to make a sound decision. There will always be one that comes along that was a better deal a day too late. You may think the car you buy is solid even after a PPI and records and it's not. Or you may get a couple good years out of it before you have to do anything other regular maintanence. There's always a certain gamble. I feel pretty good about the 83 and being that my original hopes were to get an old 912 cuz I likes da ol skool, it's closer to the vintage looks-wise than the later ones, not by much, but a little closer.
No worries. I won't do anything stupid. If I don't have a good feeling I won't pull the trigger.
An 88 with less grunt than an 83? Ummm... that's a bad thing.

Worst case scenario it's 27 hp more and the motronic is WAY snappier for throttle response than the CIS....

A little more weight, but we're only talking 100 or so pounds if I recall correctly.
