licence plate lights

On my 85 IM the licence plate light glass is broken.(shines up).Does any one know where I can get another?Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Watch E-bay. I bought a used chrome plated brass tag light for $65.00 to replace my thin steel reproduction unit. The part I bought on e-bay has a small scratch but is worth rechroming.

Are you sure the glass isnt inside the unit. Remove the chrome surround and if you can find the piece inside you could super glue it from the inside and it will look just like new.

Eric? YOU bought that?!?!?! I was going for that piece!

We need some sort of on-going thread to let each other know when we're bidding on stuff so as not to drive the prices up. And even to let folks know when something comes up that looks good.

If I'd know that a forum member was going for the part I would have stayed away.

As I missed out on the plate light . Eric, when you install the nice rechromed new one, want to sell me your old one? I have an crappy Fiat light on the car now and it's doing NOTHING for it.

I bought my ebay license light over a year ago. I installed it with the scratches and all.

I do have the pitted VS version. E-mail me and we can work something out.

Speaking of license plate lights. I got a VW accesory catalog the other day and they offer a license plate frame with a 3rd brake light strip on it. It looks pretty integated with the frame, about $60 I think. Anybody had and experience with one or seen one? Like to hear from you.

Take a look at the post down towards the bottom of this forum page titled Third Brake light. You will note that a couple of folks Johh H and Bill D have installed them and appear to like them

thanks steve,. the piece im looking for is shaped like a rectangular cup. I really should have said backup light,as its the centre glass that is broken,and of coarse it won't fit if you just turn it around i'll look on the glass to see if there are any id marks.Eric thanks anyhow but i'd like to stay with the original..

I sent my unit along with the tailight surrounds to the chromer. They were already pitted when I got my car, which was just a month old (!). I figured that after doing that I wouldn't have to worry about them getting pitted again. I also put clear silicone around all the lenses in the license plate light unit when I reinstalled them to make sure water doesn't get in again (yes, they were flooded with water when I got my car too). They look very nice now.

I believe the glass is the same as a 67 Beetle back up light.
