In anticipation of my Speedster D's arrival in a few days I am stepping up the research and ordering for items I think I will need.
I live in the land of SUV's (don't we all) but with San Diego something like the 8th largest city in the US there are a lot of SUV's, soccer mom carpoolers and cellphone talking drivers out there and I want a fighting chance. So here is what I have seen so far. Your comments are invited.
Just ordered a License holder w/ brake lights
http://noahperformance.com/proddetail.php?prod=R6270 and for a pretty good price based on what I have seen out there.

Will also be picking up a third brake light for either under the grille or just above on the deck lid. J.C. Whitney for this or check this out.
I was driving down I-5 in traffic and saw a Marine in his "ticket me red" Audi TT, it had this great LED strip about 8" to 12" long and maybe 3/4" tall with only red lens visible. It was rounded and focused to the back.
It might be an Audi Part or after market but might be really nice on our Speedsters.
Anybody noticed this 3rd brake light on Audi TT's before.

There is also this page from another forum that has a very nice deck mounted 3rd brake light just scroll down the page.

Please chime in and add to the store of knowledge. I am sure it will help the new owners including myself.

Cheers

Hi Dave:

I bought an LED brake light from Custom Dynamics -- it flashes five times and then stays on solid, although they also have models that don't flast. It is made for a motorcycle, but I mounted mine under the engine grille and it works very nicely. The cost is reasonable, too -- $25 or so, as I recall. It is called the Knight Rider.

Well I sorted out a brake light switch and headlight fuse issues on Thurs and Friday. Sure had me stumped last weekend.
Today after a drive to breakfast I installed the license plate holder with 3rd brake light in about 30 mins, a piece of cake.
I also installed a 12V power plug under the dash for Ipod/or power source. that was also very easy. My daughter is amazed seeing me do this work on cars. Of course there was the 51' Ford woodie I had in the driveway for about 2 years about 12 years ago. But that's another story.
My Mainly dipstick theomother came Fri so I stuck that in to. Looking forward to marking up the real oil temp on the idiot gauge.
It was great getting some positive little tinker/fixes completed today.
A morning cruise to Wind and Sea for Sunday maybe.

Cheers
Dave
Dave -

It's good to have extra brake lights in the rear for those SUV's on your tail - now you need to get a loud horn for those in front of you also not paying attention to their driving.

In those instances where that SUV is backing out of a parking space or whatever, and they don't see you behind them in your little Speedy, be sure to install an airhorn that is louder than f***.

Run large gauge wiring through a relay for the horn compressor so that when you hit the horn button, you don't get a puny 'beep-beep' that maybe-they-hear-it, maybe-they-don't - but you get a LOUD BLAST that EVERYBODY hears.

...I'm just saying...

Looking forward to having you join one of our SoCal cruises!!
When I saw all the Third Brake lights in Morro Bay and Carlisle I got busy and put one on my Speedster last week. I picked up a real nice license frame with LED brake light at Checker Auto and it took about 15 minutes to install. I highly recommend it. Also ... HORNS. I agree with Jim that the louder the better. I pulled out the original VS horn and installed two Cadillac horns. Now the unconscious drivers get woken up when I "tootle" them.

See you in Colorado in September,
Dusty and LMS
Jim and Dusty,

I agree about the horns. I have a Honda Pilot that has the loudest horn I had ever heard and makes people jump (even in their carcoon)with the windows up, AC on and most likely the radio/ipod/cell phone going.
I was going to buy an air horn or a Honda horn but my little IM has a very LOUD horn and makes people jump, Chrissa has had to use it already when she was about to get squeezed by a cellphone talking SUV and she said that person jumped. This was on the freeway too. Maybe the first or second owner changed out the horns but for now they are ok. I have also made some other drivers jump on the city streets to get their attention.

I'm too much of a purist and installed 356 OEM Hella dual tone horns for the real tone. They're nicer sounding and louder than the single horn. The problem with installing loud air horns or whatever is that they sound a little out of place for the car. Maybe an effective one that wouldn't sound out of place in the car would be the European dual tone ones as installed in Ferraris, those would work well.
