I know you can"t order them from the DMV, you will need to find them on-line or another source, you must buy them as a pair, the DMV
will only register the plates if there are two of them, no singles,
also the year of the registered vehicle is important as to what
color plates you are allowed to use...yellow plates with black letters may not be used after a certain year registration.....
Call the DMV for the rules before you invest in plates you can't use..
Here's how a few of us have worked this "replica plate" thing. First, order an Environmental Plate (I'm assuming you're in CA) for your Speedster. Then go to the replica plate website:
licenseplates.tv
and order the exact same configuration as your Environmental Plate in the 1956 CA plate colors of black-on-yellow. (If you're not planning on getting an Environmental Plate, then be sure to order the exact same configuration on your replica plate as is on your real plates.)
The minor difficulty is the replica plate folks won't SEND the CA plates to a California address. They will sell them to you if you live in CA, but you must have them shipped to a non-CA address (cousin, friend, etc.).
Then, when you get the Month/Date stickers for your legit Enviromental Plates, put them on the replica plate, put the replica plate on your Speedster, and stick the legit plates in your trunk.
While you may be breaking the "letter of the law," the worst that could happen would be a "fix-it" ticket were you to be stopped by the authorities.
I am not a lawyer. I don't even play one on TV.
www.licenseplates.tv

That's the URL for the Replica License Plates website. They make replica plates for almost every state in the union now so, it ain't just for California anymore.

Incidently, a neighbor of mine is a CHP Officer. He told me the "replica plate" on a Speedster trick is, as he put it, "No big deal!" As long as the plate configuration matches the one registered to the vehicle, AT WORST, you'd be given a "fix-it" ticket and be made to put the current plates on the car for a CHP inspection. This "fix-it" ticket may or may not carry a small $20-$25 fine with it.

Vince, on the "drug testing" deal...all bets are off!
I'm not an agent, I'm speedster's lover just like (and try to be) most of you.

John, thanks for the info. Your "58GT" is looking good, didn't realize you had ordered 5-speed tranny, it's going to be awesome (I was at JPS on Friday, they told me you're going w/grey silver - similiar to mine - BMW Sterling Grey Silver Metallic).
