Maybe this newbie asks too many questions, but here come two more:

1. Howcum I haven't seen any front plates on California Speedsters in any of the CA photos posted? Is it now legal to have rear plates only(in California)....at least for Speedsters?

2. Is it possible to go to the original color California plates on a newly-built or other Speedster. As I recall, they were either in yellow-on-black, or black-on-yellow in the late fifties.

Hi, Barry.

No, not legal yet.

As to the first question, I guess it really depends on local law enforcement. I my case, I have driven around LA for more than a year without a front plate (or even a bracket) and have never been bothered. Now, I don't make it a habit of doing quad lane changes at 90 mph, so they're not out to pull me over on a tehnicality.

On the YOM (year of manufacture) plates, unless you can work a miracle (or get away with fraud) at the DMV, you can either go with a current plate, or maybe a black plate with gold letters if you donor pan is late sixties. A few of us have (illegal) replica plates that are school bus yellow with black lettering - the color scheme for late 50s cars in CA. The rationale is that if you secure the rights to a legit personalized alpha-numeric, then have that same sequence reproduced in replica form, and you don't drive like a maniac, you'll more likely than not be left alone. The police can still ID you from your plate as long as it's the same as your registered alpha-numeric, and you get some addedd class to your vehicle. Again, if you've done your car right, most people will think it's original in which case a yellow plate would be appropriate.

If you do a forums search you'll find more info on this subject, including where and how to pick up a replica plate.

Good luck.

Barry -

This may be a little belated, but like Mike mentioned, it depends on how picky your local law enforcement is about these types of infractions (Like window tint, ride height, blue light bulbs, etc). With that being said, I've driven our little speedster (daily driver) without a front plate for 10 years with no problem, and that's amazing considering I live behind the "Orange Curtain" (The Orange County - the O.C.). In fact, I've had Laguna Beach and Newport Beach cops pull along-side honk their horn and give thumbs-up or say "Nice Ride!". So, it's a crapshoot (Now I'll probably get a ticket my next time out!). Anyway, good luck with deciding on your special plate!
Jim: I remember going through the cop thing such as you described. I was a 18-year old airman in Biloxi, Mississippi going to electronics school at Keesler AFB. I had to ride the bus, whining my plight to my parents. They were retiring and offered to drive my 1931 Model A Roadster cross country, deliver it to me, then visit a relative in Florida and fly back to California.

Driving by the white sandy beach on the Gulf of Mexico, a cop pulled me over. The car wouldn't travel over 50 mph flat out, so I was stumped as to why he would ticket me. Turns out that all he wanted to do was admire my car. Hope history repeats itself after I get my Speedster and happen to get stopped. I got my first ticket(two months ago)after 15 years....driving my wife's Prius. I would not have minded if I were in a Lambo, Ford GT, AC Cobra, etc.,....but a Prius?
Talking about tickets...the cops pulled me over the other day because I was supposedly driving at 39 mph in a 25 mph zone. One of them admired the car and told me twice how nice the car looked...he was the one to hand me a $120.00 ticket. Oh boy I wanted to flip him off so bad!!....
