Goody, goody! Just got my license plates and permanent no-smog (ever!) from California DMV yesterday. Since the issued plates are the usual dorky nondescript ones, I am looking for some black-on-yellow plates that could be re-entered into the DMV system legally so that I could use them on the car, instead of installing the dorky ones.

My question is: if I were to successfully bid on a pair I saw on eBay (yeah, I know they might well cost a bundle), how difficult is it to get DMV to okay their use so that they can be legally installed on the car? Does the car have to be registered as a 1956, or is it merely necessary to show that the body style is a 1956 (the car is a Vintage 550A and follows the 1956 design, but is registered as a 2007).

Has anyone ever placed original plates on their replicas with DMV's blessing?
