I plan to go on Sat Sept 5 to watch the Vintage racing, tour the pits, and hang out with SOC members. The online enterance fee is $35 by Aug 28,  then its $60 at the gate. Military  veterans are admitted free and they told me to show a copy of my discharge papers at the gate. Porsche corral parking is separate at $15 and includes Parade laps on the track. I hope to see a lot of my SOC friends there.

Joel:  Where does the Lime Rock web site mention Porsche Corral Parking?

Not that my flared fenders will look out of place or anything - I'll just tell them it's an "Emory Special"

Never mind - found it here, "for Porsche Corral Parking Only - No admission included":

And here is the page for admission tickets:

Yup, Carl, they worked for me. The girl at the ticket booth seemed like she didn't know anyone who was discharged as long ago as 1973 and she never even looked at the documents I offered her.  I offered to pay for Heidi and she said " that's ok, go on in".  I think Dan O'Connell shows his VA card.  I know you have one of those.

I have to apologize for leading you people astray.

The only wound I suffered in the Marine Corps was a crushed ego at not making Buck-Sergeant before separation...I had my heart set on taking my meals in the Sergeants NCO Mess Hall off table cloths, porcelain plates, and soothing background music!

Besides semi-private rooms instead of barrack's racks, Buck-Sergeants were exempt from curfews, rotating Watch Duties, and troop/equipment inspections!

But as soon as I packed my uniforms in the sea-bag and donned civvies the psychic bleeding stopped!

CARL!  You can still do this.....Legally!

Paris Island Marine Recruit Depot, Beaufort, has resurrected the old Officer's club and turned it into a public restaurant, complete with snappy service, classy plates and tablecloths!

All you have to do is go in the main entrance (and only entrance, unless you want to swim) across the causeway, hang a left at the rotary (follow route toward "Parade Grounds"), go all the way through the camp and look for the signs to "Traditions", towards the right up past the work-out fields.

The view of the marshes is to die for, the food is great, they have a great "Mongolian BBQ" or Steak Night once a month (Fridays) and a terrific Sunday brunch - we used to go there a lot.  Lots of retirees and dress blues around, all together.

OK, Race Fans....I am officially signed up for the Lime Rock Historics races (or is it, "Histrionics"??) on Saturday, September 5th.  Believe it or not, if the weather is agreeable I will be driving Pearl out and back, hoping to arrive out there around 9am, maybe earlier if I plan on breakfast there.

So here's the deal......Kathy won't be coming with me, leaving the right seat vacant for anyone wishing to be a right seater for the day (or maybe even a left seater for a while).  I have my ticket for the car corral so parking is taken care of, all you'll have to do is buy your own ticket in advance (cuz I ain't no "Daddy Warbucks", yah know?)

After all, we have to represent Eastern Massachusetts against all those New Jersey/York guys (and Lenny from Bristol, CT and maybe Carl from Bethel).

So.......Anybody want to come along?  I'm open for a lift-off time, but was planning on somewhere around 7am from Grafton, MA.  I'm open to a mini-caravan, too, if others are driving out from the eastern half of the state (I think Al and Heidi will be overnighting in the Springfield area).

Please let me know...   Gordon

If you're going and wish to be on an updated list, please email me at speedstahguy at gmail dot com

Here are the names:

Danny Piperato

Joel Abraham

Carl Berry

Frank Cataldo

Lenny Cuccureddu

Ed Erickson

Al Gallo -

Rick Milczanowski

Gordon Nichols

I need a cell # for Edsnova

It has come to my attention through the Internet "Ether", that "Edsnova is, in fact, Ed Erickson.

Who knew?

I always thought his last name was "Snova"!!

(Ericsson must be a pen name....That's all I can think of.)

Just shows to go ya, you can learn something new every day.  And often, us "Auld Pharts" can forget things just as fast.

Looks like it will be a PERFECT weather day for Lime Rock - top down driving for the entire day.  I'm looking forward to this trip....Almost as good a trip as what MR. and Mrs. "G" are sharing, delivering their Miata to Florida.

That great American past-time - - - - - Road Trips!

OK, so the weather was absolutely PERFECT, yesterday at Lime Rock.  mid-80's and not a cloud in the sky.  Wandered around the paddock area and bumped into friends from the Hot Rod world, the local 356 club and had my SOC posse with me (Joel Abraham, Danny P., Lenny C., 'EdsNova' Erickson, Carl Berry for a while, the Gallos and Frank Cataldo - we were a motley crew, for sure).  Even bumped into Spencer Pumpelly, one of the guys I spotted for in the 2012 Rolex race.

One thing I didn't know, was that in buying a pass to the "Car Corral", we also got to do a couple of parade laps around the course - - WHO KNEW?!?!?!?!?

So Frank was my right-seater and videographer for the laps.  We got out of the corral slowly (because I was afraid of getting my exhaust hung up on the abrupt drop to the track) so then we had to play catch-up with the pack by blasting through the gears and coming down off the back hill into the right turn to the front straight.  TOTALLY forgot about the speed increase that hill gives, so then I was braking at all the wrong times through the turn.

Just to even things out, that first lap was hurry up and slow with the other cars (you're not allowed to pass and are supposed to be doing, like, 50mph (but not us) so I proceeded to hit most of the turns poorly.   I also didn't have the tires pumped up for the track, so there was the usual sidewall squirming - other than that, it corners flat as a pancake.   On the second lap I started to settle down and I hit more of the turns better but, in general, I can honestly say I've driven better on the track.

I hope Frank had a good time . . . . . I don't think he had to shovel out his drawers after we stopped and he had THE best view of the track (and the lady spectators) that one could have!

Had two top-O-the-hill spectators come over to me after our laps and told me how they thought Pearl was beautiful (Thank You!) but then went on to say that she had THE BEST exhaust note of anything out there.  BIG Thank You!  - And to think I've always thought it was a tad too loud......."And I LOVE those flared fenders, too!" one of them said.

I hope Frank can upload that video - our dialog during the ride should be a hoot (and I hope the exhaust note comes through!)

Lime Rock was indeed a great time.  Best of all its good to put faces to the names of fellow SOCers. Other than Gordon, whom I met a couple of months ago and was, of course, my host for the "parade' (right!) laps around the circuit it was a pleasure to meet Heidi and Al Gallo, Danny, Lenny, Joel, Ed and today (Sunday) Rick and Michelle Milczanowski, showing their beautiful 1948 Chevy Stylemaster Coupe and talk Speedsters and such. Rick and Michelle live not to far away from LRP and own a VS Speedster and buy a new car every 2 - 3 years and restore them and sell them on.  Rick said the Chevy would most likley be for sale after the show.

Now the ride with Gordon was something else.....his Pearl really HONKS!  We entered the track to join the 'parade' before the diving turn into the main straight, for those of you familiar with the track, and Gordon grabbed a large handful of throttle.  'Forget the seatbelts' he said as they would take too long to put on. Easy for him to say!   Then we proceeded to stomp down the main straight and eventually catch up with a poor, unsuspecting black 356 coupe going up the hill then, after getting going again, back around and down the main straight and stop again. They really do have small rear brake lights was my thought about the 356 as we approached it more rapidly this time.  And they look real little and vulnerable too. We picked up again after that and Gordon was back on it. He likes to beep his horn at the crowd too!  You know, get all the women excited. His car is really very well sorted.  And of course he made excuses about tire pressures blah blah blah. In all sincerity he did a great job and I'm very thankful to him for the opportunity to ride along.  No need to shovel out the pants though.  I've done many driver schools in the past including this track but never in a drop top Speedster so cool so that was a treat.  I'll try to post the video later.  Its all me telling Gordon what to do as you can imagine..........

If you ever have a chance to get up to LRP on Labor Day please do.  You won't be sorry you did.  The number and depth of cars there really is impressive.  I talked to the crew chief that works for a customer of mine up in Mass. that had about 12 cars there for customers of theirs.  Must be a nice perk to have your car trailered down and prepared to race and just jump in and go! Nice guy to chat with and nice bunch of cars.  Everyone was nice to chat with.  Nothing like folks that speak the same language........car.

Great time with you guys. Lenny knows my parade lap was nowhere near as exciting. Thanks for riding shotgun, Lenny! I really love that track. You can see so much of the actual race from so many easy vantage points. And the cars in the pits are spectacular, as are most of the people surrounding them.

Bridget ran well from Milford up to the track and back (about an hour-40 each way). Going home down Route 8 I played around with a late '60s Triumph driven by an older guy with his wife. I started out by loping past them about 80 mph up a hill, and have to assume they know right then that she's not a TD. He gamely chased me down. No real speed was achieved (and there was a goodly brace of cops riding herd), but a nice cordial exchange of passes.

Thanks, Danny, for the beers; and Lenny: I trust you found your keys?

It was really great to see you guys again,  Lenny, Danny, Gordon, Carl, Joel, Ed and meet Frank C.  I wish we could have spent more time walking around with y'all but it was as hot as the surface of the Sun, and we were seeking shade whenever possible. ( Didn't want to melt the bride, she's the only one I got ).  My goal was to bring the Speedster but I'm trying to track down a not-so-funny noise it made about 3 days before I was going to leave home. Maybe next year.  Also next year I would like to find a room nearby so we can attend the concourse on Sunday.  Every time I go to this thing I see some rare old car that I've either never heard of or seen in person.

I hope everyone got home ok and we'll see you at Carlisle, if not sooner.

OK, so Frank took a video on our "Parade Laps".  There were two parade laps and I've deftly edited the best parts of both into a single lap.  That's the good news.

The not-so-great news is that the exhaust noise (I TOLD you my exhaust was loud) seems to have overwhelmed the audio input of Frank's $27.95 Sony Cyber-Shot-still-camera, which he was using on full video, not something it seems to like a lot.

I have cleaned up the audio as best I can and then run an anti-shake program against the clip and cleaned it up a lot, but it's still a little garbly - sorry, that's the best I can do given the raw footage.  I also added some titles so you'll know where we are on the track as we hurtle around it (a little dramatic license, there...)

The even-worse news is that it exceeds the max size I can upload directly to this site by a couple of hundred Mega-hoozies (video files are really big buggers), so I'll have to dump it to You-And-ME-Tube sometime tomorrow, cuz it's getting pretty late here and Sophie, my geriatric Jack Russell, is sitting here groaning like it's WAY past her bedtime.

Check in sometime tomorrow morning and I may have it uploaded by then.  (but don't get all excited and all.......it ain't THAT great - just another lap around another track with a couple of New England Yee-Haws!)

I was walking around the paddock with Heidi and Al Gallo and we were commenting that none of us had been taking any pictures.  Just didn't feel like it this year and I don't know why.  Hopefully, Frank's video will make up for a little of that, but there was a lot going on there in the paddock and garages and tents, even if we didn't show much of it.  Next year, more photos, for sure!
