Thanks for the video, Gordon. Now I'll know what to expect next year when I get there. I was a little surprised how flat the track was, but then I'd compare it to Mosport which has some great elevation changes.
Watkins Glen is a great track also. Nothing like being Walter Mitty for a few minutes
Compared to Roebling, this one is mountainous. I know Gordon had a tough time keeping his foot out of it.
I've been to Mossport - That's one great track. We've also (Chris and me) driven Pearl on VIR, Watkins glen (another great track), NH Int. Speedway, Roebling Road (as Lane said, nice track but FLAT!) and Hutchins Island Raceway (Lane - try to go there, too - it's across the river from Savannah) and, of course, Lime Rock. Each is cool in its own way. Lime Rock has these very interesting gradient changes as you travel through the turns, making things very interesting. Plus, as you come down off of the hill onto the front stretch there's this cool little bump which un-weights the entire car for a second and makes you suddenly drift towards the outside - a bit unsettling at first til you learn to expect it.
There's only that one hill at Lime Rock, around the back side of the track and with an abrupt elevation change, but it affords a great view of that section to the throngs of spectators on the hill with their coolers, beach chairs and picnic spreads - a truly great way to watch a race, for sure. Going through the dog leg on our lap there were some sweet-young-things waving to the "race cars" on our parade lap so I gave them a blast on the air horns - not something you get often during a real race.....Hey, how often do you get to toot at the crowds while doing a lap at Lime Rock??
Second only to running on the track is getting TO the track. The last 45 or more minutes of the trip is on wonderful back roads - windy, lots of elevation changes, beautiful scenery, all that stuff. Well worth the trip.
Thanks, Gordon. I took a few snaps. My lap vid did not come out, despite Lenny's best efforts. Here are the highlights.
Well done, Ed! Totally caught the flavor of the day.
It's a lot of fun being there, and a lot of fun getting there, too - 2 easy hours for me on I-90 and then 45 minutes through the countryside. LRP is, quite literally, out in the middle of nowhere, but it is some of the most beautiful nowhere you'll ever find. I always love the trip out there, and to see all those beautiful old cars in one place, along with approachable owners and mechanics makes it a very special day.
Thanks for the write-up!
Your commentary reminds me a lot of BS Levy's "The Last Open Road" and 'Old Man Finzio' - his version of Sam. Some of us had the good fortune to be 'adopted' by a "Sam", somewhere along the line. Those guys made all the difference, didn't they? I have had several of them from different disciplines throughout my career and those are the guys I sometimes seek out (if they're still around) to show them that, somehow, their thoughtful guidance and suggestion really had a long-lasting impact on a kid who didn't know what he was doing but was willing to listen. I'll be thinking of those guys all day - Thanks.
Brilliant work, Ed! You really nailed it. I do have a few photos but I don't think there will be much to add to what you've done here.
Agreed
Thanks so much for posting that. It's not the same as being there, but it sure helps.
Not "much to add"?
