Great Plains Aircraft proudly introduces Liquid Cooled Cylinder Heads, for use on VW powered Sport Aircraft. These heads are a 100% new casting and not an adaptation of the VW Water Boxer cylinder heads. The heads are designed and manufactured utilizing state of the art engine simulation, CAD solid modeling and CNC machining centers.
These heads are made specifically for aircraft use out of A356 heat treated aluminum and are available in either 92 or 94mm cylinder bore size. All heads feature dual 12mm spark plugs, one on top of the head and one under the head in between the pushrod tubes. Water flows both horizontally and vertically in the head to cool the head evenly and thoroughly.

The temperature will vary by installation, outside temperature and climb rates. There are two radiators - one per head, which are supplied with the kit. The compact chamber design in conjunction with water cooling allows for a higher 9.0:1 compression ratio, improved fuel consumption and reduced excessive rich mixtures for takeoff.
The compact head design is dimensionally the same as a stock VW cylinder head. Exhaust ports are located on the end of the head and the intake ports are on the top of the head. The head features 42mm intake valves and 37mm exhaust valves, both stainless steel. Stock VW rocker arms, but requires a longer rocker shaft for the wider valve spacing. The heads mount the same but are slightly smaller than the stock heads. Stock springs and keepers are used in the head. Standard bolt on or clip on valve covers are utilized.

I know a guy who has a wasserboxer here in Des Moines. It was completely rebuilt and sat for several years, then when he went to start it up one of the hydraulic lifters went flat. It is a beautiful engine, but man what a pain to tear it all down just because of that one lifter.
