I am looking for a supplier of a replica exhaust system that emulates the 4-pipe exhaust used on original speedsters that will fit a VW engine. Apparently there was a manufacturer in Japan (I believe they were called "Flat Four") that had a version of the system, but they do not supply it any longer. Is there another manufacturer that supplies these?

I appreciate all the advice. I looked in the JCWhitney and could not locate the item #. The Monza looks interesting, but I have been advised against. Mike, which of the JC Whitney were you refering to? I was also refered to Custom Speed Parts out of Germany. I have purchased here before, but found them quite expensive. See www.csp-shop.de/cgi-bin/shop2/shop_main.cgi?func=start&wkid=68698621106
Exhaust piping and mufflers for tubs can get very pricey very quickly, and even more so if you have a larger engine and need larger diameter exhausts and if you want heater boxes.

Given my speedster is a warm weather car, I put the following exhaust on the tub (2007cc engine - 1 5/8th pipes) for just over $400:

J tubes instead of heater boxes and a 4-2-1 collector from Kymco. My local Meinecke shop (which doe a lot of custom work for speed guys) then added some custom bending and a tuck away muffler to finish the install so it doesn't drag or protrude beneath the lines of the tub.
I can save you alot of time and money by saying that the only exhaust system that seems to have decent flow with heater boxes (1.5" all the way through) and you don't have to remove it to get to the valves can be bought at Cutom Speed Parts. The exhaust is pricey but it works and it fits with almost no modification. If you want the moza tips you can simply have them welded to this exhaust. This is just my experiance through two other types of exhaust.

I have to agree with JP. Finding someone to fabricate your custom exhaust system (and do a first-rate job) can be a difficult task. I really like my custom system, but it was very expensive and took three weeks to get done. But, if you want a motor that produces a healthy amount of horsepower, you need to go with a 1 5/8 " system. Unfortunately, there are not many choices out there.

Jacob Roorda:
Before you decide on an exhaust size (1.5 inches, 1 5/8 inches, etc.) you need to decide what for engine size and state of tune you are going to use the exhaust system.

If you put 1 5/8 inch pipes on a stock 1600cc engine you will lose a significant amount of power and, since there is not much power there to start with, well you get the idea.

The air-cooled VW is quite sensitive to exhaust pipe size.
My hats off to Ron who went through alot of trouble to get that system worked out. In a perfect world I'd also have a slightly larger exhaust however I'm not willing to go through all that work and aggrevation again. My biggest problem with finding a good exhaust was getting a header that didn't locate the collector close to the ground. The muffler can be hand made no problem, the heater boxes can be bought from Berg but the header is the problem.

I wanted a merged header but the problem with merged headers is two-fold; one, the collector sticks out the back too far and two, the systems sold in most VW shops sit way too low. That's why I bought a merged header and had it modified , which included having the collector shortened so that it wouldn't stick out the back. The big problem for Canadians is that these systems, from CSP and others, cost so darn much money when we order them in. The CSP system, including taxes, was going to cost me something like $1200. My custom system cost me about $1400.
Ron
That's funny about the Kymco Thing header being 1.5" becuase when I talked to Jeff in person he only had them in 1 3/8th, must be new. That sure would be the inexpensive way to go, Kymco 1.5" Thing header with a fabricated exhaust so that you could get to the valves without removing it oh and then add the special 1.5" heater boxes. Second thought that still may cost allot.

Kymco's # is 888 321 3560. Talk to Jeff. My system uses a 1 1/2in thing header with 1 1/2 heater boxes, after that you can do what you want. Pictures of my system are posted in my file Carumba 356, and a complete description is in the other discussion about exhaust systems. I think it's under " building a new exhaust system" or somthing like that.
Eddie,

That exhaust system you got is absolutly beautiful. If I had known that system was out there I might have gone that route. I bet that bad boy sounds great too! I noticed that the system is a tuck away, excellent for ground clearance. Can I ask, can you get to the valves with the exhaust still mounted up?

J-P
I personally feel that is a solution to a non-existant problem. IMHO if you could have a system that does everything, which I have not seen yet, having to remove 5 bolts to drop it,is the one feature I don't mind living with. Not having to drop it to adjust the valves may be important to some people, but I kind of enjoy working on my car.
Eddie,

The one very clear advantage that system has over the CSP is your ground clearance must be excellent. I remember when I got my speedster that it had the Thing header and dual hideaways on the car and I never, ever scraped. The CSP does scrape when going over speed bumps to fast, got to take 'em slow.
Anyway, looks good!

Gentlemen, I have been away from the web for a few days and noticed all the information. I am amazed at the insight and quality of ideas. Thanks for all of your candid thoughts. I have to check on my ccs, but I seem to recall it as a 1776 cc with dual Kadrons. Any recommendation on the right flow or diameters?

Again, thanks for all the ideas.
