We have the Speedster loaded up, the truck loaded up and we are going to bed now to get up about 4:30am to start on our way to your stomping grounds. So move your livestock to the back forty, lock up your women-folk, warn the children and muzzle your dogs .. we are on our way!

OK--I'm fueled up, packed and ready to launch tomorrow (Tues, 5/13)
first layover: Knoxville. Dinner tomorrow night with my son and John Hallstrand and his bride. Wed caravan w/John to Christiansburg and overnight there, then caravan with maybe 10 cars to Carlisle Thurs morning.

Any bluegrass pickers going to Carlisle?

Can't wait!---Jack
I'm furiously working on Pearl to get her running right. She was acting a little puky when we were still down in Beaufort, and now she runs great until she warms up and then goes super-lean and stumbles all over the place.

Got delayed working on her this past weekend - Chris and I took both our truck/trailers to Southern New Hampshire and picked up a never-started CMC kit (it was advertised on here) and will be putting that together over the Winter.

When I was still in Beaufort I changed the lower intake manifold gaskets and it improved a lot, but it's still not right so, since I'm running out of time AND violating the "never work on your car the week before you leave" rule, I'm shot-gunning it and replacing every intake and exhaust gasket tonight, along with blowing out the jets and replacing both fuel-line filters. If THAT doesn't cure it, we may be leaving her home this trip....It's never fun doing cuises to dinner with a sick car...

Everything's ready to toss into the truck!
Jim,
Did you mention DULCIMER! Did you know I used to own and operate the Hummingwood Dulcimer Company in Estes Park, Colorado? That was way back in the mid-70's (in our tie-dyed, hippy days).

TRAVEL UPDATE.... We are stopped for the night in West Des Moines, Iowa. In the morning we head out for Huntington, Indiana, to visit some friends for dinner. Carlisle is getting closer !!!!

Happy Trails,

Dad, seriously. WTF.

If we don't bring the car, we're still taking a truck that wouldn't notice a car on the trailer behind it anyway, so what difference would it make to trailer it down and futz around with it there at the show? You're going to find all of the parts you need at one of the vendors anyway.

You're becoming one of the people you always try to talk into bringing their car anyway.

Gordon: BRING THE CAR!!! Don't be dope. You know you want to. We'll fix her up, if that is what she needs.

On all this wrenching/tweaking business, and looking fwd to sunny weather, does anyone have ANOTHER tent/canopy sort of thing that could be set up as a "garage". I know we will have the facility supplied tent, but how about some extra shade for those impromptu tune-ups? Might be useful, no? Anybody have one, and also room to bring it?
MAJOR PROBLEM!

As of 6:00PM, the car is running like a large steaming pile of s**t. The carbs are so screwed up due to my emergency removal and cleaning, that I am not sure when, or even if, I will get there tomorrow. I will have to go by my local ACVW shop (local is relative - it's close to an hour from home) to see if they can be tuned properly. If so, I may be a little late. If not, I may be in my Acura, if I make it at all. Freakin' wonderful.
OK, FIXED HER!!!!!!!

Found (believe it or not) a few pieces of latex glove material inside of the bolt hole where the fuel line banjo fitting connects the gas line to the carb on one side.

No idea how the hell it got there, but I cleaned it out, along with the pilot valve seat (found another piece in there) and then checked the other side for yucks (nothing there) and she fired right up and runs mint. About one day screwing around, shot, but I have a complete set of new intake and exhaust gaskets, now. =>)

At least we can use her to do a demo of syncing carbs, as I threw everything together and just static-set the mix and balance - they have to be off a little.....

Anyway, Carlisle, here we come, Speedie and all!!

Gordon
(I may get the smell of "Ode de gas" off of me by the time we get there...)

Chris tells me to stop whining and pack the truck......

Talked with quite a bunch of Y'all this morning:

Bill Drayer is just puttering around waiting for everyone to show up.

Lane got his car running well enough to head North, thanks to a VW mechanic on the other side of town from him. I suggested that he buy some "Dry-Gas" when he fueled up next time and dump a can into the next two tanks - THAT should get the water left out of there. He called a couple of hours later and said he had done it and noticed an immediate improvement (like, within 5 miles). I told him to do another dose and it should be OK.

Jack Crosby has made it to Christiansburg, VA, along with Hoss and Leon, and they were sitting around waiting for Lane to come chugging in. That must have been around 4PM, so he should be along shortly.

I've just about finished puttering around and packing things (seems a lot lighter this year......) and found that I left the tent banner in Beaufort (dammit!!) so I'll see if Staples in Carlisle can crank one out overnight when I get there - simply have run out of time here and about to load the car up onto the trailer.

See Y'all in Carlisle!!!!

Gordon and Chris...
We are here and waiting for all you slow pokes! LMS and I drove all day in the rain ... from south of Ft Wayne, IN, to Carlisle!! Rain just stopped and they say only very light rain in the AM tomorrow. We just washed the car down and covered it for the night. We will save some of the food and wine in this town for you. No! it has been a long trip ... perhaps we will consume it all before you get here.

Happy (dry) trails,
Dusty and LMS
