i rebuilt my gauges, cleaned, regreased, etc

they are pretty easy to take apart. i don't see why you couldn't take the 356 tach you have, rip the insides out, photoshop / print a new face (8G) and use 8G tach guts. The OEM tach (and VW speedo) have a huge case, so fitment should be a problem.
Tomm-

Or.... you can just take it out and send it to North Hollywood Speedometer. They can do anything you want to your gauges. I recently had them modify my combo gauge to replace the fuel gauge with an oil pressure gauge. They replaced the left idiot light with an amber lens (for a "fuel-low" light), and screened icons over the all four to show me what they were (at a glance. I always forget).

Next up will be just what you are talking about- re-doing the tach for 8000 RPM.

They can do pretty much anything you want, and the final product looks stone-cold stock (even the luminescence of the lettering is the same). You could dork around for 5 years and never even get close to this doing it yourself.
