I've had a 1996 IM and then I built a 2013 with Henry.  I have done the " Emissions dance" in my state of Massachusetts two times and also with a Shelby Cobra Replica.  If the car is more than 15 years old there is no emissions requirement in MA.  I am looking for a nice IM or even a Beck that fits this age range.  I love Roadsters, but am open to Speedsters.  Just looking to buy an emissions exempt car that I can park next to my Cobra.. Please let me know if anyone has any leads on something like this. Thank you.

Chris

That is a shame.  We have similar emissions regulations up here (Ontario), but if the car is registered as a 'kit', it is exempt, regardless of year of manufacture.   I've had three Intermeccanicas registered up here, with no need to do emissions testing.

I'm surprised Mass. doesn't have a similar stipulation.

Could you register the car in another state?

Are you running with the year of manufacture plates? How?  If so, I thought replicas weren't allowed.

That plate is the same ID as one of my dad's old 356 coupes. The plate frame is from his dealership in the 50's. I had the license plate made when it was still legal to have them made.

Lucky dog!  I'm awaiting my black plates from the artisan crafters at San Quentin.

This thread makes me think of  my upcoming battle.  What a hassle the dMV can be! After nearly a 6 month battle with the Georgia DMV to get a title for my 2003 IM, we are thinking of moving to North Carolina next year. Before I drop the subi engine in my car, has anyone had any Speedster experience with the N.C. dmv? What kind of hoops will I need to jump through - again? Inspections? I might want to leave my vw based air-cooled  engine in it , until I get the new title.... I have a clear GA title in my name... (  I posted this question in the "anything goes" section too.)

What is it titled as?  Makes all the difference.  I doubt that the DMV folks would know an aircooled from a Subaru.  All they usually worry about is if there are any stolen car parts in the build.

Either Henry at IM or Carey at Beck should be able to provide some registration guidance for you.  I don't know if NC is a SEMA state or not.  If it is, there should be a provision for replica vehicles.  I got the following after looking for 30 seconds - your u can do better, I'm sure:

Thanks Gordon. I did see that info . It is the same beginnings that were given me with Georgia. It all seems to pivot on finding the right person who knows what they are doing. Thanks to good old Meade, I found a name of a human being at the  Georgia dmv who actually was able to do more than simply send my stack of notarized forms back and ask for more forms, again, then again, then .. Thank you Johnny Hudson.
Like Chris, I am not into the annual hassles to tag the car.
I guess I will simply go for it...  and deal with things as they arise.
But ... I am not up for another fight like I had with Georgia. Life is too short for that ulcer again.
6 months, 12 forms, 3 inspections, 2 trips to the local police station, 2 trips to the bank for a notary, 3 overnight deliveries to the dmv, etc..  ;  then they got the name wrong on the title. So we went around again...
F- it.

Does this mean you will not sell it to me?

No but because you're from Boston you'll have to pay the special IM owners pass along fee. This fee is specific to residents of the Boston, MA. area purchasing from a California resident in a coastal area and I believe it is specific to the Southern California coastal area.

I think this fee can be waived if you are a paying (supporting) member on the SOC site.

@Rusty S If you get rid of the IM, will you have a car in time for D'Hoe?

Well if the right Spyder came along I sure would. I would be going it alone as Donna has already warned me that she will not ride along in a Spyder and I don't have the sales skills to convince her otherwise. And just for you fellas who think it's my bad driving... she said no matter who was driving!
