I finished up this one not too long ago, it was going into my Ghia this month. Turns out that the car has too many "problems" to pass state safety inspection, and will be stripped out for parts.

Too bad you live so far away.

I pulled my friend's the 1600 a part this AM, clean oil, rocker arms etc. Hwever, crusty caked valves, heavy carbon on the pistons and most of the hone marks where absent and a slight ridge on the cylinder walls at the top of the piston stroke, rods had zero play so the bearings are ok. At least a complete top end is needed (Pistons, Jugs and freshen up the heads). I thought we might just as well try to come up with an easy replacemrent 1600 dp motor.
What I am looking for is a nearly fresh 1600 dp (turn key or long block) like one pulled from a nearly new VS for an upgrade etc...... tnx anyway! ~Alan
Depends on who the builder is and what is actually done to it, there are those that do a minimal job i.e. a quick valve job w/ a set of rings, honing the jugs. Others that do it right... with a case align boring, all new or reconditioned components.
I have seen 1600 long blocks for as low as $650 and the higher end of $1,700.... "You get what you pay for". ~Alan
