Looking for a quiet muffler

i did some diggin on the camaro muffler.

 

looks like it has an 'in' on one side and dual outs on the other.

i have a magnaflow and it's loud, but not annoyingly loud.

Whoops, not a Camero muffler, but a larger muffler with the in & out on the same side.  My muffler doesn't have any markings on it, so I don't know the brand/manufacture.

I'm starting to like the dual inline setup.

Ron, I am running double Magnaflow's with Merged headers on the Suby.  Its is very quiet.  At first I thought too quiet but as time goes by I realize that it was a wise decision (with the input of Henry of course).  

 

Check out the "Recommended exhaust for Speedster Replica" thread started last year.  A bunch of ideas were presented.

I just went online and found a company that sells them relatively close to where I live, which worked out well because they delivered it for free.

They're not cheap; probably close to or even more than the price of a regular hoist.  For me, I didn't have any choice (low ceiling).

The IM is really easy to work on.  For oil changes, valve adjustments, etc., I can sit underneath the engine on my mechanic's stool.  MUCH easier than jack stands.

I've got the same issue with my A1 Sidewinder. Pretty macho but after a 40 miles i'm ready to kill someone. my buddy thinks it's cooler than ice but it's too fkn loud for long trips. my neighbor (he's like 90+ and on 02') looks pissed off and waves his cane at me as I gingerly cruise out of my culdesac

 

Yeah Marty I got a 'semi' lookin at your subie muffler. nice..and the cat is so easy to get to. might be a dumb question but is that a hi flow cat?

I've heard something about a fatboy muffler. supposed to be fairly hush.

I suspect the only way to get a really quiet exhaust system is to go with an inline two muffler system, which is what I plan on doing.

I think the best sounding muffler is the Flowmaster Hushpower. It isn't the quietest but but the sound is so sweet! I couldn't stand the Magnaflow that came with my A-1.

Ron, perhaps you could run two Hushpowers or one Hushpower and a 10" resonator?

I have one that I used along with the Magnaflow. It did quiet it down a lot.

Got any pictures?  I made the 4 hour run from Charleston to Asheville yesterday, and I would be interested in a way to quieten things a bit without compromising performance.

I found my A-1 a bit too loud with my 2110cc engine, so I added a 12" bullet muffler from Summit Racing. It now has a nice mellow sound and it hasn't noticeably affected performance.

I am about to add one of Tiger's sidewinders on my new 2110 build and will add the bullet muffler. Puff, how much harder does it make removing the mufflers from the header flange to adjust the valves?  Did you add a hanger to support the bullet muffler?

If you looked at my first photo you can see the little bullet muffler or  "resonator". That was in addition to the stupid hemorrhoid of a muffler that comes with the A1.  

I used a hanger at the tailpipe.

 

BTW, if anyone is interested in that piece o' sh!t Magnaflow, send me a dialogue.

the bullet muffler slips right onto the pipe from the A1 muffler and I used a clamp there.  I then added the chrome tailpipe with a clamp and hanger.

That's what I've got.  My system was custom made before A1 days, but Henry installed an A1 muffler on my IM that a customer thought was too loud.  I should have know better.

The thing is stupid loud and it doesn't even sound that good.  It's REALLY annoying with the top up, and it has GOT TO GO.

 I've been on the net all day looking for something like that. My A-1 Sidewinder is also obnoxious (2017). I last maybe 15 minutes in it before it irritates me. A one hour trip to the shop and I'm frazzled. It hauls balls but whats the use if there numb by the time you get to where your going

 

  Of course I saw all the 'glass pack' style mini muffs' and I'm just not that keen on them. I'm used to seeing those on american cars. Probably work fine but I want a real mellow sound for some longer hauls ie cruisin down 1 with the first mate and her relaxed.

 

There's a ton of room in the back of my motor for a horizontal muff'. Enough for something a bit bigger than those cherry bombs

I figure any of the top four mufflers (Dynomax, Magnaflow, Borla & flowmaster) in a 'two muffler inline system' would be fairly quiet.  It may come down to availability,  price, and personal preference.

I originally had a Magnaflow on my 2110 engine and I liked the tone, but it was a bit loud.  Before I decided to have the IM rebuild I put the Magnaflow on my Miata and really liked the way it sounded.  It had just the right noise level when connected to  the mid-pipe resonator.  So, at the very least I need a resonator, but will probably go with two mufflers.

Your right Ron. 2 inline..just like my BMW. I ordered that muffler today. It's supposed to come tuesday. I can't wait to tone down the noise

I hear you Ron. My Spyder muffler is pretty loud when I am on it full throttle. I have an add-on muffler for long trips that slips on and clamps with one bolt. That helps some, but the real culprit is intake resonance/reversion. Dual carbs do that, I am wondering if dual throttle bodies do it also? I was thinking of ordering blow-through turbo intake end pieces and extending some tubing rearward behing the trans. Then put a cone filter on each side. The intake resonance is especially loud due to the vents that are right near the air cleaners. The resonance is loudest even at part throttle right around the torque peak.

How would you apply your idea/potential resonance fix to the minimal engine room available in speedster?

Danny, funny you should mention the intake noise from dual carb/throttle bodies, because I've been thinking about the same thing.

It's a Remmele Type 1 Air Box System from Prowagen Per4mance in Kent, England.

Unfortunately, it won't fit on my IM.  I don't have the clearance. 

I'm a new Speedster owner. I bought an older made car from the former founder of a big time company. He said that he was the 2nd owner and that the last owner had it built. When I got it, I took it to Vintage Speedsters (Hawaiian Gardens, California) and Kirk said that this car was built by him many years ago and it looks good. After a few months I called Vintage because something blew sounded like and the car died. I towed the car there and they got it running, but the car is not running smooth and choking. Kirk and his mechanic said that I would most likely need a tune up to fix it. I also took it in to Kirk for the light switch being lose and seemed like it was the problem with the lights not working in the last 2 weeks. After they change the light switch, the lights have been blowing out every single day. It has been 2 days and I've been there twice. I'm taking it to Kirk this morning again to see if there is a short or something. 

 

MUFLER> I wanted to make the car less noisy and they told me that they are installing 911 muflers for $500 approx. It is really quite but it kind of takes it away from the vintage look. What do you guys think? By the way, I almost bought a car from Troy. If Troy is the one that is from Bakersfield. He is very nice, professional, and easy to work with. I only didin't because it was a bit far and I found a killer of a deal.

 

Any ideas on the mufler or on the problems I'm having. Do you guys think Vintage Speedsters is the best mechanic place to go to fix things?

Dean, you would have to post a photo of the 911 muffler.  Mounting a 911 muffler on a speedster is new to me.

I love the Vintage Speed exhaust system (nothing to do with Vintage Speedsters).  It is VERY well made-a quality piece, but someone on this forum tried to install one and had major difficulties and ended up selling it.

Unless someone can prove me wrong, the only way to get these cars really quiet is to install two mufflers, inline, which is what I plan on doing.

Loud cars sound cool for a while, but after a while it tends to grate on one's nerves (we're talking 61 year old nerves here).

Hold out a few more years, Ron.

You'll be partially deaf from old age and the loud muffler won't bother you.

I'd love to install one of these (see photo), but I want heat.  Even though my 1  5/8" custom (and hollow) heater boxes only give me warm air, it's better than no heat at all.  If there was another solution to getting heat to the cabin I'd be very interested in a Vintage exhaust system.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Didn't someone on this forum order an exhaust system from Vintage and have major trouble with the install?  (not clearing the body)  I think he ended up selling it.
