I'm new here. I would like information on Spyder kits. I would like to possibly get into this. I've built a few hot rods and one Chopper. I have experience in glass work and some fabrication.
What do you think is the best kit in the $17,000 dollar range?
I don't know much about these . I've seen kits using the VW chassis as well as kits using tube chassis. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a kit that they may have started and lost interest in I might be up for something like that.
thanks guys.
Regards.

Howdy from Atlanta GA!

I'm a total noob here. I had VW Bugs for years in my youth. Now I'm 42 years old and too old and fat to live without airconditioning and all the power amenities of newer "real" cars... ;~)

But I still have a 68 and a 70 bug sitting in the yard and enough new parts to build one of them into a very nice street bug... 1776 motor, dellorto carbs, tranform transaxle, disc brakes... ect, ect, ect...

But I'm burnt out on them... the bodies are rusting and in need of body and paint work now... my wife wants me to sell them off...

And then I had the idea of building a 550 kit on one of them... we would probably keep it forever if I did that!

While I have done paint and body, I am a former mechanic and do industrial electrical and electronic work as a proffesion today. I am also a former welder/fabricator and I have worked in a race car shop many years ago.

I am confident that I can put a kit together. But I really would rather my first one to be as cheap and as limited in labor as possible. I am willing to sacrifice some quality for a bolt to the VW pan body kit.

Can someone point me in the right direction to get up to speed on what's available?

Also, it rains hard here in the summer. Thunderstorms are no fun without a roof. What otions are there for staying dry in an unpredicted short summer afternoon downpour?
Lurkermike, if you are too old and fat and need modern vehcile conveniences to keep you happy, you won't like a 550 Spyder. They are the exact opposite of what you are looking for, no heat or air, no cigarette lighter no reclining seats, they're noisy and need your attention much of the time. I suggest a Misubushi Spyder which has all those modern conveniences you have gotten used to at age 42.
