I've recently become interested in getting a Speedster kit and I'm looking for pointers on where to go and what to do.

I'd like to save some cash by doing some if not most of the assembly myself if this is  an option, but it depends on what the options are.  The various retailers seem light on info in that regard, but I did notice a few of them mentioning 2-year lead times, which I'd like to avoid as well.

In terms of what I'm looking for, I'd like a car that looks as original as possible but has a Subaru engine and updated mechanicals.  I'd also like it to be new and not a used build so I can set it up exactly like I want and not have to do any restoration or repair before I can even start customizing.  I don't plan on any racing - road trips and general cruising only.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Seeing as how you're in Canada that's going to be trickier than you might imagine. However, @ALB @IaM-Ray @Krusty @MangoSmoothie.ca @WNGD @jesse postill @Bob: IM S6 and others are all in Canada and could give you a better answer than me.

I think you're either limited to importing a 20 year old completed build or you can import parts and build it yourself. In Canada you have Intermeccanica. You can probably get a semi-completed kit and finish it yourself. Or you can talk to Carey at Special Edition in Indiana or Greg at Vintage Motorcars in Southern California and have them ship you a kit package you can finish yourself. Finding an incomplete CMC kit is going to be tough and won't be of the same quality as one of those other builders. A Subaru engine will require quite a bit of additional building/fabrication because of the water cooling needed over an air-cooled engine. But, if you have the technical skills, the tools, the time, and the money I'm sure you could get it done.

You. CAn essentially import any part or body kit just not on wheels. Anything that can be rolled around is a no-no!
After you build it you need to show all the receipts for Major body parts, and or unless you have it built but you have to claim you helped or commissioned and were Involved.   The document that Bob quoted is helpful for you.

We (Beck) have Canadian specific kits and have been shipping them into Canada for several years now.  It seems each province has some minor variations in rules, for example I can send more parts to Ontario than I can BC.

As for modern suspension and the ability to use a Subaru 5 speed, I believe realistically you'll be limited to Beck and IM for those requests.  I think everyone else is on a pan, uses VW suspension still, or has an aftermarket "one size fits all" bolt on suspension alternative...

As for 2 year wait time, that is old news, wait time is longer now and getting even longer by the day/week, at least for a Beck.  But if you want quality, sometimes you gotta wait...
