Just became a "Speedster Owners" member and I can't believe what a great forum that you have. I am looking for my 1st speedster and want it to be black on black. I have talked to VS about building me one, but if I could find one without the wait that would be even better. (We only have so many nice days in Indianapolis)

go to see the Dan Palmquist VS, it's a stuning Meissen Blue on top of what you could look at. If you like the color, it's a must. If not, such a shame....

buy glenns, you can't match the personal, tasteful touches with
a "new" build.

Does anyone know anything about this car on eBay(website below). Item # 2478397002. The sales person says that he believes that it is a VS Built in '99. Looks pretty good to me but I'm just a novice.

buy glenn's.
Brian,
The reserve has been met at 12,900...I'm thinking Thats a great price
with 4K miles....its got the right tranny, 1600 with single may be
a little slow but.....
Its in NY.. if your an East coaster, sounds like the right one.
A new one will be 20K minimum....13K for your first speedster
is a good deal....Haven't seen any go for much less on ebay or this
forum.........
But thats just my opinion.............

Ok......the car is going for about what it is worth considering the way it is optioned out.......I would be very leary of bidding on a car against someone who by their bid history has never bought anything. In the Ebay world this is usually someone setting up a new account and bidding on their own item. Ebay doesn't care how much fraud they have just as long as they get their money. You need to go look at the car or be prepared to back out. I would not usually recommend buying a used car from a dealer on Ebay either, especially one with negative feedback. This guy has negative feedback and doesnt even care enough to start a new id to cover it up....DANGER WILL ROBINSON. If you want to go look at the car drive it at 70 for 20 minutes and then 15 around town you will probably figure out why he can't sell it locally. I bought a car on Ebay and yes it had some problems that I'm sorting out, but I really expected these problems. If you bought this car and needed to put in a new engine it would already be overpriced. I don't like the way this one smells..JMHO

What I'm saying is it may be a great deal or it may be that the second you bid the other guy will bid more.......don't get to hog wild on a car you havent looked at or you must assume the worst.......Glenn has a nice car and so does Ron both have said they are interested in selling and I think you will be happier with Glenns car if your set on having black. There was also one advertised a while back in Texas that I would have been all over if I was still in the market to buy.

Hi Brian,
You might want to forget about that one, unless you are willing to do a little bit of body refinishing and painting. I looked at the car about seven weeks ago. It's been reposted two or three times on e-bay with the reserve being met atleast twice.
The car dealer is selling it on consignment for the owner.
The body looks much better in the photo. Lots of surface imperfection, like it was taken off the mold before the glass cured. They didn't even bother to fill and smooth out the surface features.
The engine looked clean, but the floor of the showroom had enough oil drippings to dress a salad for two. Take that for what it's worth.
The interior was a little rough, but not terrible.
Hope this helps!

Brian,
there you go...A guy who saw the car and doesn't recommend it and another who warns about ebay fraud and buying site unseen..both very good points..I bought a used one I found on ebay, but I went and looked at it first and made an offer...Buying a speedster from someone on this site will usually be safer than an outsider..
Take their advice.....
But I do find it hard to believe that Vintage would produce a
car of the quality that Mel discribes in this thread...
I have a Vintage and realize their Paint/finish could be improved upon, but uncured glass?

Going along with that comment, I looked at and test drove that speedster and would advise anyone to stay away from it. There is no paperwork confirming when it was built, how many miles are on it, etc. Speaking of mileage, I definitely don't believe that it's accurate. For a car with supposedly 4000 kilometers, it sure has a lot of problems. The engine and trunk compartment barely open and close, top is ripped and loose fitting, the suspension bottoms out on every little bump, and the doors rattle like crazy. The transmission also grinds when you downshift to 2nd gear. Call me skeptical, but I think it has more than 4000 km on it. That salesman doesn't seem like the straightest arrow either.

when do you take delivery mel?
Former Member
Steven,
I'm hoping that I will have it delivered between May 30 & June 6. I'm struggling with a couple of transport company at the moment.
dctransport out of PA quoted a great price, but is proving unreliable by not returning e-mails and phone calls. A-1 Auto Transport was also within the budget but had too many complaints on BBB.com
If I don't have one secured by Friday, I will do the oneway airfare. Drive part way, auto train and finish the last 4hrs home.

Steven,
Did you get your IM from Oregon or Washington state. I recognize some of the pictures. What a great buy for you! I love that optional hardtop too. Any chance we could make a mold of it!

Mel thanks for the compliment on the car.
I bought it out of Oregon on Ebay and the hardtop is very nice.....I live in Iowa so making a mold would be difficult........also in order to make a mold you would have to take out the head liner. This is the nicest hardtop I have ever seen on a convertible. It actually has a double shell type of design and it fits great. But I quess I don't really know what it takes to make a mold. This hardtop goes on a D model, but I think you can still buy one from IM???

I have used Thomas Sunday Transportation out of Pennsylvania at least 5 times. All times, they were very professional, top-of-the-line trucks, courteous drivers, and the price was great. MUCH cheaper than Passport or Horseless Carriage. Try a search on the web . . . their website is www.sundayautotransport.com. Good Luck with your new baby!

Joe,
Thanks for the assist! If you've used him five times he's got to be doing good by you.
I requested a quote from Mr. Sunday. I checked him out on www.bbb.com. It shows one complaint in the past three years that they have tracked his business. The problem was resolved - minor quality service issue, no specifics. That's pretty good! for someone in the transport business.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he may make it happen! : )
Thanks - Mel

Thanks to everyone that has so graciously responded to my posting. Needless to say I am going to stay clear of the speedster listed on eBay. Thanks to those who actually saw the car...that is exactly what I needed.
I am still waiting to hear from Glenn about his car and am open to any other input out there.

Hey Brian,
I recieved your email and will give you a call tomorrrow (Thursday) morning. As some of the good folks on this site know, I'm constantly staying busy. Heck, some of them (David Salvato, Vince Manto etc...) even saw my car during the Hotel Del run a couple of weeks ago which I couldn't attend, good thing the wife was more than willing to drive the car without me.

I talked to Glenn today and it sounds like the car is in good shape. I guess my only hesitation is the car is 11 years old. I know that glenn and the previous owner have kept this car in great shape, but are there wear and tear things that I can expect (vs building a car that is produced now in 2004).
Glenn was very comprehensive in our conversation about his car(i.e. trunk lid handle, small paint imperfections, etc...)and I thank him for that. My question... What kind of things could I be looking into as far as maintainance vs building a new car?
