Looking to buy a preowned speedster

Hello, I am new to the site and looking to buy a preowned speedster replica
I see a few builders out here like Vintage and JPS -- not sure about the differences
Between these builders as well as Beck-- I'm looking for a nice condition speedster in the 15 to 20k range-- any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any leads on one for sale that would be great as well.

Brett, the Speedster was loaded. 3:88 rear end with a custom built 2275cc Type-1. Full flow oil with cooler. It came with the VS 1915 and I had the new engine built in 09. CSP Shifter. We drove from the Chicago Suburbs to Tail of the Dragon and Carlilse with no problems. More pics in my file. See, Brett, the problem is they're all out on the west coast (well not really) and then they gravitate to Baltimore/DC. But Troy sure does a nice job with the ones he gets a hold of.

I have a red flared CMC here in PA. It is a complete fresh build with zero miles and should be done in two weeks, it is similar to the below picture but without the quarter panel air intakes and different American Racing polished aluminum wheels.

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy one of Allan's "pre-sorted" cars. They are always well-built, nicely optioned, have spectacular paint, and always well-priced.

Come to Carlisle and you will see a few of the Cars Allan has built and they will be among the nicest there regardless of the builder.

alan, looks like a nice option-red is not my first choice in color-i prefer white or silver but this might be worth looking at and its kinda in my backyard-chambersburg is 80 miles from me--nice easy drive up--
what color interior will this have and what are the other specs-engine, tranny, etc
and finally the damage to me ofcourse???

I thought if you have a original title from seller - example -1967 VW with original vin
Number you can just title car as such without Maryland safety inspection but online states otherwise- and they require you to take car to MVA headquarters in glen burnie
For safety inspection etc.

And what about my situation with buying a speedster from Alan merklin with zero
Miles on the odometer - will that raise a red flag with our ever so friendly
DMV title examiners at my local Gaithersburg md location---

Well it appears from my research that since I have a car with original vin and title
-1970 VW - I can just walk into my Maryland DMV and title car as a 1970 VW
Without the hassle of a Maryland safety inspection - just present a bill of sale
And pay the title tax tags and I'm done- is this correct my fellow Maryland speedster owners???

You have 3 options. 1 - Register as a VW with regular tags but it will require passing inspection and every 2 year exhaust check. 2- Register as a street rod with nothing more than a title required. 3- Register as a historic VW and not mention that your car is 'significantly' modified from a stock VW. There is no checking of the vehicle with street rod and historic.

well- i registering as a street rod is the better option since the cas has been substantially altered from the original design--

Rob gave me the three options for maryland tags and title

I've got Historic tags in MD with a TD replica on a '69 VW pan. They were pretty laid back about it when I brought in the title, which had an assigned VIN from the build date--1980 in my case.

That build date gave me the option of "Historic" plates because the kit was assembled more than 25 years ago.

I also had the option of going "Hot Rod" plates because the car is a hodgepodge of parts. The fees are similarly cheap with similar restrictions --I think it's 5k miles or something.

Very reasonable.

They titled it a "1980 HOMD MG TD" with the assigned VIN.

Bottom line: MD is not a bad state in which to be a car nut.

Go to the Annapolis MVA off of Admiral Cochrane Drive in Riva. I'll happily go with you to cut through and red tape. Bring pictures of the car, too; they'll give you the now for 'significant modifications' without even blinking.
