Rather than try to look through previous topics for my
answer, I thought I would start a new one....
I am planning on upgrading or changing my motor after the holidays and
need advise...I am currently running a 1600, single carb
dual port dual exhaust...seems rather meeger for being called
a speeeeedster.....I bought it for a lot of reasons, none of which
was for speed, but its a far cry from thrilling from a speed
point of view...I have an opportunity to buy a 2176 with big HP
almost new for about 3K which appears to be a bargin. The guy has
receipts for 7500.. but from what I read on this site that might be more motor than I need. I cruise the canyons or hiways on weekends
and I don't want problems on the road. reliability is no. 1...
I DON'T have the need to brag about my motor so as long as I'm
looking at about 100 HP I'd be happy. So what motor do I need and
How much can I plan on spending....This is a weekend cruiser, not
a daily driver....
I am located in Sunny So. Cal.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.....
Vince

I would think about a 1776cc engine with a good set of heads and dual carbs. This engine will go a hundred thousand miles and make about a 110 h-p. Heat will not be an issue. Just keep up on the oil changes and valve adjustments and be happy for a long time.

Pat Downs/CB Performance
Well Vince, Pat is one of the best engine builders in the country so you have to listen to what he says. I, on the other hand, don't know nearly as much as Pat, but am more than willing to share more than I know ;-p In my opinion, get all the power you can. I've never met a guy who says he wishes he had less horsepower. What I can't tell you is where the trade-off begins between size and reliability.
Just remember HP + lots of maintainance....the bigger you go the ore it cost, and the more probles you can have. for all around reliability I also agree 1776 is the way to go...besides it doesnt take much to push these around......personally I like a nice built 1914...with a nice semi rad cam, and 48 IDA's
Thanks for the kind words Ron. Being a good engine builder/designer requires that you "read" the customer and build what best suits his needs. I have not talked to this person but from what I read into his post, 110 h-p will probably knock his socks off. Also, he probably has a stock transmission and more h-p will only cause him more problems down the road.
Along these lines,I will probably not drive my Speedster more than 1,500 miles per year, so long term reliability is not a concern. If I can get 6,000 miles out of the engine, I'll be happy. I think someone else made this point once before. But when I do drive it, I want some real street power to enjoy.
