G'day,

For me the journey just begins. My first post here.

I had never heard of a 356 Speedster till a couple of months back when my wife and I saw one in a carpark and both fell in love with it. (Makes me a lucky man, huh?). We managed to find the owner just to find out a little about it. It was a pastel yellow which looked fantastic (a sort of retro 50's look to my mind). It turns out that he had bought it just the week before on ebay for $25,000 (it wasn't in fantastic condition). That's Aussie dollars (I'm in Australia).

Okay, as it happens I was born in 1956 (right in the middle of the 356 era) which means that it's my 50th Birthday next year and guess what I have decided will be my Birthday present?

Anyway, I'm very jealous of you Americans (and the Brits) who seem to have access to a smorgasboard of second hand replicas at reasonable prices. It seems that they are as rare as hens teeth here down under. Most of the few available are Left Hand Drive and I really want to stick with RHD.

So, I'm searching and looking. But I have a year before my birthday (and I need that time to save the pennies).

I'm even considering the possibility of importing a second hand one from the UK. It turns out that as long as the car is more than 30 years old (and as I understand it a replica built on a VW frame would qualify) there is no import duty and only a 10% GST to pay.

If anybody has any pointers I would be most gratefull. It would be even nicer to get in touch with other 356 replica owners in OZ.

Cheers.

Gday mate. I go to the land down-undah about 2 times a year and have seen a few. You are right though you need RHD since I think you aren't allowed even as a collector (or maybe with a big fuss) to have LHD. There is a manufacturer in NZ called Platinum and I have seen a few in Sydney and one in Surfers. They are awesome. Maybe you want to get in touch with them and see if any owners are looking to TRADE UP??? Click on the MAKERS tab on the top.

Cheers mate and can you get me a XXXXGold out of the fridge?

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I agree that the Platinum Speedsters look great. Unfortunately, the starting price for a fully built one is about $A68,000 !!

I have the necessary patience to wait for the right "used" one to come up within my price range (around $A25k). Meantime, I shall continue to build my knowledge base (largely from this site).

Thanks again

Thanks Stan,

Yes an option like that is in my list of options if the easier solution doesn't come off.

I guess another possibility is to import the kit and have somebody build it for me on a locally sourced donor VW. (It's not something I would tackle myself. Coincidentally, there is a company just up the road from me that specialize in restoring Vintage cars. (Alvis etc). They do beatifull work but probably this may be below their interest (and may work out very expensive).

Plenty of options to explore. As I said, I have patience on my side. In fact, the anticipation and buildup is a great part of the whole process (Now you know why my wife loves me and is happy for me to get a speedster :) )

G'day again,

Just keeping in touch.

I'm still in love but the journey seems it will be long. 356 replicas (RHD) are pretty rare in Australia. It's not a problem however because I am a patient man and, anyway, it gives me time to save up the pennies.

Meantime, I have been satisfying myself with what might be called a little "foreplay".

I have bought myself a nice little 1:43 model of a speedster that I can stare at and dream.

Last week, I managed to buy (for $10 on ebay)a little 12 page magazine from 1967 "The Porsche Type 356 - Profile Publications". It has a nice history of the 356 marque and some great pics. Interestingly, it includes a full list of the specifications of all the various engines used in 356s, including serial number ranges, carbies etc etc.

Anyway, having fun.
