you can see the large hole cut in the sheet metal for the return (can just see the silver of the pulley beyond). I have spent hours pulling an engine just to salvage the german tinware to install. I was initially looking for thermostat veins. I did all of this while there was melting snow on the ground. This tin has my blood, sweat, and tears in it. I dont want to go poking holes in it.

The thermostat flaps were not there, but the tin was 100% complete and in immaculate shape. I could not pass it up. All the breather hoses were as they should be, someone really took care of this beetle. Compression on the engine was very strong. Was thinking about buying the entire motor for $200. $200 seemed steep form a junkyard though. The floor boards were shot in the car, im assuming thats why it was in the junkyard.

CB Maxi Pump 3

Could plug that upper hole in the case and use a CB Maxi Pump 3 (see below) - both hoses would be below the engine tin then.

The current hole in tin could be smaller and could use 2/3 of a rubber grommet to seal area; make a patch that's bubbled out to cover curent hole; or could take a new piece of tin and bang a bubbled area in it to clear the fitting.

Aren't you still missing a couple pieces on that side - the sled piece that covers the push rod tubes and the piece the goes just behind the upper hose (I have extra of 2nd piece you can have - I have bracket and rod to go with bellows Dale has for you).

I bet there's no title for the bug. Floor pans can be replaced for under $300. If it has title then buy entire thing for $250 and sell off pieces you don't need. OEM fenders/hood bring decent prices on SAMBA. Even a VW pan with trans and title can bring a few hundred. The Buggy man in Lorton, VA gets $100 for a stripped pan with a title. He probably also has the flaps.

p.s. Still have your Bug-Out trophy.

Dale, definitely appreciate you doing all the leg work on the t-stat and flaps. Let me know what I owe you when it is all there.

Greg, there is tin below my pushrod tubes... the edge is blocked perfectly from view by the braided line. This area is supposed to be open isnt it? To let the warmed air escape out of the back of the car? Anyway, ive got all the tin i need from the donar motor. Id buy the entire car and tow it somewhere IF i did not live in the concrete jungle that is Baltimore City. I have nowhere to keep it. Plenty of good atuff on it though, original radio still installed, the cardboard glove box was in perfect condition, all the dash buttons, ahstray, etc. etc. Sad they will just crush it in a couple of weeks.

ill look into the maxi pump, thanks for the suggestion. What would i plug the hole in the case with? something brass? Aluminum?

I will pick the trophy up from you at Carlisle this year.
