Hi, I love this site, thanks! I am close to buying a '79 IM car and called IM to see if I could retrofit roll up windows to this speedster, the answer was no. I then inquired about seats as I would like to lose the original bucket seats for the roadster style and learned that those seats cannot be fit as the new speedster body (which takes the lowback seat) is several inches wider, but the early cars cannot use these seats, so, I am wondering, what have owners done with IM cars in terms of using a lowback seat style. My decision to buy is somewhat hinged on this as I want to use the car for a daily driver. Any ideas/cures? Thanks!

The difference in seats is not that a Speedster is narrower than a Roadster...its that a 79 is a pan car and the Roadster seat of current day is a tube car. You may be able to find the old pan Roadster seats if you try. They were high back, fibreglass formed seats. Not the most comfortable but, they were higher back and non-reclining. I have driven the Speedster seat and found them very comfortable and decent to look at, I would try them first, then worry about changing them. I would not let a deal go just b/c of the seats. Like I was told before..."If you want a Cadillac....buy a Cadillac!" these cars are not the same as driving a Cadillac.
I was hoping to retrofit the current IM roadster seat into a older speedster but was told by IM that they would not fit. I drove the car with the stock IM seats, but for distance driving, they will get tiresome after awhile, so I am looking for a creative approach that involves a lowback seat in order to keep a stock/retro appearance. I am guessing that many owners must use old 912/ghia seats?
