I know it's a minor detail, but I'm majorly obsessive. What is the proper period-correct lug bolt color and type for a late 57 speedster?

OCD? Rust by now! I suspect they were just painted silver. I bet gun blueing would look nice and hold up well.
Love to see photos of Speedie if you are down to worrying about lug bolt color!
I bought the OEM VW plastic (chrome or black) lug bolt covers for my 914 2L Fuchs.
I remember standing around with a group of 356 owners, listening to them argue over the proper license plate screws...
That being said, every lug nut I've seen on a 356 looks to be zinc coated.
Here in humid coastal South Carolina my lug bolts have not yet rusted in 10 years. they gotta be coated with sumpthin'!
Okay, "coated with sumptin", but what color is the coating?
Not sure what it is but "bluish-silver" sounds about right, so I'd say zinc.
The color of dirty, dusty grease.
The originals, were black chromate (because it seems that the Germans were as OCD as you). The chromating only offered a tiny bit of rust protection (this was the 1950's, after all) but was better than nothing and did not interfere with the threads. They were also the same as VW lug bolts.
When people ran chrome wheels, they still had dark lug bolts
They looked cool, too.

They had studs and lug nuts then. Studs were black and the lug nuts were black.
Are those spacers factory?
Bill: Those are original Carrera spacers. NOS from Sierra Madre @$225.00
