Howdy all,

I have a luggage rack that came with the car when I bought it. I was about to mount it,

I saw one post on mounting, but not sure it will work for me. Mine has the posts that go in the corners of the deck lid grill.

who else has had good success in mounting?

Thank you

Kent

AAEC3FAF-34D4-4289-BFDE-7CE57424D6CEMy FiberFab (CMC) rear deck lid sports an original Speedster 356 grill, with a modified-to-fit luggage rack from Vintage Speedster in LA.

That looks and fits the same way as mine.

Could you please tell me how you mounted it to that grill?

The vertical posts in the center of the rack go down between the slats in the four corners of the grill. Holes for the posts need to be drilled into the fiberglass rain shield. Large fender washers should be epoxied, glue, fiberglassed, etc over the holes. On the underside put some more fender washers over the posts and use Nylon nuts to secure the rack to the lid. You may need to trim or reshape the fender washers so they don't stick out on the top or bottom of the rain shield.

Here's an AMMCO luggage rack on a CMC with the cast hibachi grill.  The OEM bolts weren't long enough to go thru the grill to the rain shroud so I got some stainless steel threaded rod and cut to length.  I used Chrome lavatory feed tubing to cover the treaded rod along with stainless washers and cap screws.  To use a VS rack with the CMC hibachi grill would require grinding of one of the cast slats on either side - the tubing used for legs is just too large.

Heidi Gallo here with a question/opinion. We are looking to get a luggage rack for our Vintage (we think) Speedster. The inside of the grille measures 8 1/4" W x 14 1/4" H. Does anyone know if the stainless rack from Vintage Speedsters will fit on our grille? I tried calling, but no answer. Hoping to get it for the trip to Carlisle. Here is a link to the one I am looking at:

Everything about the car is VS and I'm sure the grill is too.  Just trying to decide which rack is better for me.  Thanks guys. Hi jack complete. sorry

Hello, Heidi and Al. For reference here are a couple of pics of the rack that came with my car. It's either a Leitz ( that's what Henry said ) or a Leitz replica.

My rack has a standoff tube in each corner and they are all positioned to go down through the grill slats to a rectangular metal frame that is bolted permanently to the trunk lid rain shield and is painted the same colour as the car making it hard to see in the last picture. The benefit of this system is that the deck lid itself is only acted upon once to attach the rack mount. The rack comes off the car in less than one moment without even opening the lid.

Most of the center area of my rack is flat which might be better for semi stiff vintage style luggage that we have unless you are planning on very soft luggage which will contour to a rack curved all the way.

I wouldn't mount anything to the grill itself...there's very little holding it onto the deck lid.

If you look closely at my rack you'll see small rectangular loops mounted all over the place to hold your tie down straps in the correct locations. I haven't travelled yet with this new to me setup but I think those loops might prove helpful. There's a rack like mine on ebay right now for $289. One like that might give you a better head start than the one you showed from Vintage.
