Troy:

I think Ricardo was very qick out of the box (no pun intended) yeah right!!!
Theron I would have thought the same!
Vince you came.. through in the end. Sort of tit for tat!
On a serious note any others I should look into? Smaller the better but ease of installation is important.
I would love to have one that you can easily take on and off but I am guessing such a mountng arrangement does not exist where you can take it off and put it on when needed.
Stuart - The holes would be in the "rain shield" baffle on the underside of the engine cover. You could use rubber plugs or short SS bolts if you wanted to fill the holes but don't believe they are part of the rack "kit". I would reinforce the fiberglass in the area where the rack bolts on and use large SS washers on both sides to distribute the weight and absorb vibration. Not sure I would rely on it to hold much weight -- more for classic look (hence nice leather suite case with lots of luggage stickers on it).
Hey Stuart!

As you may already be aware, Vintage has a small luggage rack for a nominal price (around $100 I think). I've included a couple of pictures of a Leitz luggage rack (circa '57-'58) just as a matter of reference. It's a little more pricey, but like anything else you'd use to personalize your Speedy, it's almost always a matter of personal taste. Both are eazy on & off (typically 4 bolt attachment)

BTW- whatever you decide on, it would be prudent to use fender washers or whatever to support the weight of the rack and whatever you attach on it. Good Luck!
Hey TC!

I'm glad we were able to work out a deal on that rack. I hope it was usable for your application. As for the stickers, everywhere I go with that suitecase, people always comment on the authentic looking travel stickers. I tell everyone that I got got them from my "Unda Cuva Brutha" in Kingston, Mass.

Hey Jane!

I'm sure there is some pricey doodad made specifically for mounting badges like I have on my license plate. However, my application is strictly low-rent. At the hardware store, or lumber yard, they have these braces used to secure wood frame joints, either 90-degree or straight braces. Well I just plopped down my $0.75 for the straight brace and attached one end to the lower license plate bracket bolt and the other end to the back of the badge - Voila!

You know the old saying - "Necessity is the mother of invention".
Hey all...

I know this is a luggage rack thread, but those who love the racks and the vintage luggage might have fun with this site:

http://germanplates.com/builder.htm

You can immediately see what your authentic German license plate will look like. They stamp your plate in any style, from the vintage black on white style to the modern Euro design. Could you dig one on your front bumper?
Hey TC!

Thanks for the offer of your macrame treasures. I may be missing my 'owl' wall art, but at least I still have my macrame plant hangers (my 'Creeping Charley' and 'Spider' plants are doing well and I use my Mac Davis and John Denver album covers as drip pans).

Hey Troy!

FYI - I'm bringing some vintage luggage labels to the Paso Robles meet to donate for raffle/auction. Hope to see you there!!

hey Jim, nice set up, looks great! I'm looking for a way to mount badges on my frony over rider bar, years ago I had a stainless steel bracket more or less that attached right to the over rider tubular bar on the rear of an old beetle, can you picture it, it really is a perfect place to have a badge, mine was a D, anyway it wasn't that much maybe $25, or so, just haven't seen em since
Hi Jane!

I know exactly the bracket you speak of. I had the same on my '57 VW oval. I think you may be able to locate this bracket on the VW website TheSamba.com

It's a pretty inclusive site so it might take some searching. Or if there is a VW club or Vw swap/meet near you you can get that info.

I'm sure a trip to the local hardware store will inspire some fabriaction ideas of your own.

Good Luck!
If all you're looking for are the clamps for a simple badge bar/over rider bar, these ought to get you started:

Hey Rob!

Can your car BE any cooler?! I don't think so. With the driving light action, luggage rack and vintage case/stickers, be prepared for beaucoup crowd action around your car at the car show next week.

We will try to cruise by and check it out on our way home from Paso. Will State Street be blocked-off or will we be able to cruise down State and look for you by the Arlington? Maybe we'll have time to stop at The Palace for some Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce.

Looks good my brutha, have fun!

Later! - MUSBJIM
