You guys are something else. The best.

I'm sorry I didn't give you a heads up first before posting it for sale. Also sorry for that self-promotional "popular author" thing. It's embarrassing to have friends see that.

Tom, I'm relieved that you think the ad's okay, cuz it's my virgin run on eBay, and even with Alan's blessing I had misgivings about it.

Thanks, Ron. I always respected your opinions.

Wolfgang, I lost count, but there are plenty of birthdays left for the next one.

Ed, don't be sad. This little car has brought so many remarkable people, so many incredible friends, so many good things, a whole new world into my life. It's given me an audience of really cool readers -- what a writer thrives on and lives for. And it's also given me pride and confidence I'd lost along the way. In fact I can't think of anything or anyone that has made such a difference in my life. Except Toni. And she's the one who made the Speedster happen. So it's done its job and then some. My only regret is that I didn't have time to use it more the last few years. That I didn't get it to Carlisle more often. That I never made the time to go on a run up to Danny's and do some country like the Delaware and the Hawk's Nest with him and maybe Lenny. Heck, if it goes to the right person, you may well see it at Carlisle a whole lot more often. There are plenty of great memories. Its last job will be to help us recover from time stolen to write the first two novels of a trilogy, bridge a long term downturn in our business, and collect ourselves and see what's next. Two for the road.

Jack, always a class act, a great guy to have for a friend and a fan. And you're right -- I'll be back with another one. Thinking already of a rat rod, mean, lean, ugly, no upholstery, a red oxide primer paint job with a couple of rattle cans twice a year like the original one I had in college.

Lane, no question. For a minute I found myself hoping that I'd still be welcome at Carlisle. And then I realized how offensive that thought would be to people who have never given me the first reason to ever think that way.

Max

Here, in the forgotten backwater of Grafton, Massachusetts, birthplace of nobody in particular (except maybe the folk singer, Jamie Brocket and his memorable song of the sinking of the Titanic), there resides THE most gorgeous '32 Ford Highboy I have ever seen.  The attention to detail is absolutely amazing and it is very thoroughly "Old School".  It includes terrific accent pinstriping by one of the best in New England, all over several coats of red oxide primer.  I can really see a VW rat rod set up like that, 3' long shift lever with a flying eyeball shift knob.....all that stuff.

Get through these preliminaries and move on to the next chapter, dude......it might be your best yet.

(But you're gonna need a new site Avatar, either way)

Gordon -- I forgot to add Speedster after rat rod. Just took it for granted you guys knew it would never be anything else. That highboy sounds cool though. Pinstriping on top of primer. I'll take that shift knob too.

I'll never live that "popular author" line down. I'll never deserve to. I'll need to be kicked in my popular ass for every birthday till I'm 2000.

I'll call ya when I post my next E-Bay ad for one of my beetles.  I've sold cars with regrets but something always comes around to fill the void Max.  I have a 1988 RX 7 with an LS-1 that cures need for speed, my Intermecannica for sunny days, and my rat rod when I dont care about dirt or bugs. My keys will be in the speedster for ya to drive next year if yours sells.

p.s.  The rat rod is a blast..you can see it when I sell it to Alan!

          The Speedster Whore

Max,

Please always consider yourself more than welcome at Carlisle - with or without a Speedster.  I always thought a patina'd, rat rod Speedster (or coupe) would be a great idea just like the originals sometimes look.  After 25 years on the road I guess my unpainted, primer-spotted Speedster is starting to get there.  Good luck with the sale and keep in touch.

I don't know Alan, but wouldn't you say we're more like Speedster pimps???

Theron -- I came on board in 99 when the site was kind of an offshoot of the site you built for Vintage. Kirk guided me your way. Those were the savage years when this group thing was new and we didn't have any ground rules -- didn't know what they should even be. There were some real nasty keyboard wars. I remember this thin-skinned guy named Rich from San Francisco who couldn't stop standing on the soapbox of his IM and trashing the rest of us peons. He'd bust a vein or start bawling if you challenged him. Another guy named George Dasson. The most gracious thing he ever did was go away. The political battles. Lots of keyboard rage. I remember how frustrated you used to get, Theron, managing that battlefield. I remember the time or two it got so crazy you wanted to hand things off to someone else. I couldn't blame you -- but I'm sure glad you didn't.

Vinny -- 35K reasonable -- you mean my car or that guy's spare ball?

Troy -- sorry you had to do the update for me. But thanks. Here's the rest of it. I lowered the reserve to $33,000 a day and a half before the auction ended. That last high bid -- $32,988.00 -- came in just after that. Just twelve dollars shy of cracking the reserve. And then things just stuck there. I had around 52 watchers toward the end. I expected something to give. It never did. Twelve bucks. I wanted to do something -- let people know -- but this is my first eBay gig and I don't know the rules well enough to break them.

This morning I sent the high bidder a "second chance offer" for the amount he bid and gave him a day to let me know. He says no, I guess I'll go to the next bidder, and if there's another no, I'll probably relist it, or go elsewhere to sell it. I don't know. Alan's been a great guide through this process. I didn't always listen to him and that may be why the car's still cooling its heels in my garage. Any advice you have, Troy, or you other experienced guys, I could use it!

Max, I meant reasonable price for a left (or right) nut, based on our age & usage of same...

My feeling about your tub is that only you know what it is worth to you, what you spent vs what you can afford to lose or gain by it's sale...It would appear that you lost a decent sale to me, (for 12.00) perhaps relisting will get him back.....

Personally, I won't deal with anyone on ebay with zero feedback, which is what you are showing, but that's me......

$12.00 ???????  Wow.

2years ago I sold 4 valuable banjos, 2 were Gibson pre war models.  They averaged about $25,000 apiece.  Yep, for banjos!  I used ebay and put no reserve at all.  Highest bid gets 'em.  All 4 brought me more than I would have set as a reserve.  The bidding was amazing

and went right up with a LOT of bids on each one.  I'm a believer in using a no reserve auction now.  Why wouldn't that work with a Speedster?
