Aluminum block is probably about 25 lbs heavier and the lifter bores can take more aggressive cam ramps without needing sleeved. Alum bubble tops can fit larger strokes and you can find Alum cases with deck heights other than standard to fit various rod/piston combos.
The magnesium cases are reported to run about 10' cooler oil temps. For all but the most extrem motors, a mag case is fine.
Aluminum case cracks can be welded...successful welds on magnesium is problamatic
once (if) it catches fire - you can't put out magnesium with water.
(T4 blocks are aluminum)
For a long time T1 aluminum cases were crap. They're a lot better now.....I hope so, since I have one.
Corect me If wrong but Aluminum cases can be rebuilt with out redoing case savers and without reboring the crank runns
if your case is dead from a nion counter weighted and or unbalanced or not properly balanced rotating assy it dosent matter what the case is made of.with that said I have 2 bubble top cases, 1 nos as21 mag case(2028 in my car right now702 pm,jan11 2013) I dont like the mag cases, unless I get another great deal on a new one I wont buy any more, with that said the aluminum cases(mag ones too) have dubbled in price in just a few years.my first one was $440,at a store down town(yes hear in fl)now by mail order there about $800-1000.00 were getten screwed but whats new?
You'll be ok with the aluminum case and have no regrets. Purists like the mag cases, but frankly, I think the aluminum is a better choice for 2275 / 2332 (or larger) engines.
Article in 14 Jan 12 WSJ entitled "Autos Shed Pounds for Mileage Gains" says "Engine Block: Automakers are working to replace iron or aluminum with magnesium." Should be interesting combo - fire prone lithium batteries with bright white burning magnesium and noxious burning plastics.
LoL. Would someone send "marksbug" a CAP, space and period key? Great info but gives me a headache reading.
...spell check would help too

Good luck with that...right, Mark?
I can spell check just fine, even spell chick.HEAR IS THE CAP ON TOP OF MY HEAD, and hear is me ----ing to class for the next peroid. key for car is in my pocket.
I'm sure it's just his keyboard. Some of the keys must be misplaced.
You either get it or you dont. if you dont, no amount of spelling will help. And yes the key bord is old as am I.It has way more keys that I care to look at. Eye's got's Big fingers too. Bad joints. bad eyes. Lots of migranes & seeing eye galsses make them come even more often. I also try to help keep the out of work or retired reading teachers sharp at thier craft and give them something soft to chew on. I have seen a lot worse that mine, and it dosent bother me, as I have enough brains to be able to read it with out any issue. so if I say my car engine is blue.is it blown up is it fealing down, or is it blue in color? is this rong? Or just a pic of a guy in china? if space was avalable I would get some and add more space between, but I dont have a rocket any more.and the space between my ears is holding up the caps. Why? beclause I like it dat way. ( I'm wating for the spelling teachers of the world to show up at my door one day......So I can thank them for doing such a good job on the rest of the world and letting me play with engines,cars,motorcycles,gokarts,4 wheelers, machines, tools, fire, and all sorts of things that they needed fixed properly by somebody that could do it properly because I had no wish too and was not going to be a spelling teacher. Then show them the wall of diplomas I have, and then thank them again for teaching me how to read, witch was aperently not high on the rest of the worlds priority list. But thats ok, I dont mind.
Sorry Mark, like bad teeth, your writing is hard to look at. Simple grammar and spelling is as warm as a handshake from a friend. Communication is the transference of one's thoughts to another. The thoughts I personally get from your disregard of your audience is that you don't care what others think you're trying to say. I am not chastising you or your communication skills, just expressing myself.
Nicely done Nolan!
Mark and I have had conversations about this elsewhere; he's on his best behavior here. His material is sometimes a little hard to get through, but with some practice it's easier to understand, he's pretty witty and there's sometimes really good info (he has a lot of experience, knows his stuff and is not the one room schoolhouse dropout that I once called him, hoping to get a rise out of him; he didn't bite) hidden in there. What can I say, Mark; I'm a convert!
I get it; Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish and 3 for Mark.
PS: I always press 1, I don't have enough brains to figure out what language he is using, Ghettoese, Slangauge or Appalachian!
Mark rocks,nuff' said.
Yeah, Mark - Rock On!
I actually have fun reading your posts, because I used to have a guy working for me managing new computers into the world and he thought and typed just like you. I hired a really good Secretary for the group (oops....shoulda said, Admin), just to help him communicate outside the department and it worked great.
Why did I keep him with me for 16 years? Because he was the best damn, wide-scale project manager I ever met and could manage people face-to-face better than anyone. His projects were always on time and under budget and his project teams loved him. So what if he typed a little differently than me? The thoughts in his memos and emails were true gems. Like yours.
I forgot to add; I have the CB aluminum case, and the oil at first ran about 10 deg. hotter than with teh previous mag motor, but I realise that was probably due to the engine breaking in and creating more heat, since it has now cooled down to within 5 deg. of the previous mag motors temp.
I bought a aluminum case so I would have good lifter bores and not have to align bore if I rebuild, plus the extra strength is a plus.
One more for Mark, quoting the awesome band Yardbirds
"Can you judge a man,by the way he speaks or spells?", "Is this more important, than the stories that he tells?" Sorry guys, had too.............lol
