Make your own carpet

Hello, I'm the goofball with the Ghia/356 hybrid.

Since I have speedster seats, a Ghia carpet set won't work. So I thought I would make my own. The only problem is sewing the binding around the carpet(so it will look professional). I can sew but I dont have a machine( used to do my own suit alterations).

Man that's awesome! I was going to have an interior guy do new carpet, not anymore, when I get around to it this winter I'll be going this route.

I was gonna go for the Instabind 3 yr ago but instead found --a carpet place --to install real sewn edging for the same $1/ft.

Dave can you post the carpet store? I would prefer sewn but this is a low buck option.

i was thinking about this last night and this would only work well on cut-pile / square weave on 90 degree (ie - with the weave). Have you tried to cut a square weave on an angle - fray city.

I have custom ordered oatmeal square weave, and initially thought this would work for me, but.... :(

Paul, I used sqr weave. I'll try and get some clear pics up.

Use really sharp shears to get sharp edges.

Altogether I got 40' of binding done for the speedster.

Good call David. You MUST have sharp scissors. I used a pair of carpet scissors from Harbor freight part # 95442-5vga, they were only $5.99. I used a $5. gluegun from Hobby lobby. The carpet I used was a $35. remnent


I have not figured out what color my car is going to be but I wanted carpet while I drove it as is. At a dollar a foot, sewn binding is a Very good price. When I decide what my final color combo is going to be, I'm sure I will use sewn binding.

Instabinding is $45. for 54ft( any color). I have about $110. plus maybe a day and a half (including making the pattern and install) in this project. If you have a car that doesn't have a carpet kit this is a good way to go.

I want to replace that crap that came with my CMC with square loop stuff, but it's real expensive. What are my options ?

Has anyone recently found an acrillic or other synthetic carpet that looks similar to the German square weave?

There is a synthetic carpet at Lowe's that looks similar.

The name might be Statos.

I've seen two colors of this carpet at Lowes - one black and one tan.

Mike is dark grey. I bought a carpet set from JPS. I think he used the Lowe's carpet.

Al, I think you typed a V instead of a B. I believe the carpet company is Beaulieu of America.

yup. i bought a 12x8 foot roll of the stuff from a distributor. Waaay cheaper and very nice oatmeal colours.
