Cory, Captainfun here. I see your located in Maryland like myself. I recently bought a 01 VS speedster for my wife's 40 B-day (I wanted to get her a boob job and tummy tuck) but oh well!!.Anyway, my question for you is, Registration in Md. Right now the car is titled as a 70 VW. When I called the MVA they said I would have to bring the car to Glen Burnie have it inspected and then they would change it to a 57 Porsche rather then a 70 VW. My Insurance company said it doesn't matter to them and that coverage on a Porsche is cheaper. MVA said it needs to be re titled to be legal/correct, what are your thoughts and how is your car titled? Thanks, Kirk

Registered my Speedster in '83. The guy at MVA said it doesn't look like a VW and isn't a Porsche so he titled it a "1983 Kit Car". I'm not sure if they were shorthanded that day or if this was normal but the inspection turned out to be hiding it behind a wall for abut 45 minutes and never looking at or touching it (don't think I was supposed to see that).

I recently registered a streetrod (not a Speedster) and Paul is correct, you just go in with your bill of sale and walk out with your tags - no inspection required. BTW, your tags will say "Street Rod" at the top.
I'm going to try to sort of answer from Cory ... He's a little predisposed at the moment.

I'd say that you should go down to the MVA and talk to them. I depends on who you talk to and when you talk to them as to what they will say. If you don't like the answer on a particular day, then don't do anything, and go back on another day and talk to someone else. Or better yet, go to a different location. Eventually, you may get the answer you're looking for.

The MVA website has some good information, but the rest of the registration process is subject to the agent's interpretation or training.
I did plenty of research on this prior to purchasing my speedster. I was told over the phone on two different occasions the same thing. Bring in the title, Bill of sale, proof of insurance, drivers license and you should be golden for street rod registration. The car has to be 25 calendar years or older and has been substantially modified from the manufacturers original design to receive this designation.

Captain Kirk,
So you don't want to give up the Genisis Device? Well... Okey doke!
You have a great story with the 40th BD and all. Teresa is right. Smile and be as nice as possible. My wife bought me my speedster and I told my story to the right person at the DMV and she went the extra mile. It sounds like you have your ducks in a row. Good luck and welcome to the maddnessss.
So it really is your wife's car... in that case I would have opted for the boob job! :) They have a car show in Glen Burnie on Saturday mornings during the summer. As soon as I get my car put back together I am going to head over. I hear it is more American Street Rod's than anything else so your car will fit right in.

Paul
Kirk,

Now THAT'S funny!

I have a friend who got the 20-year-old-girls for his wife, and she did stop sleeping with him. They're divorced now.

He thought that's what he wanted, and he was right! But once she had 'em, she didn't want him anymore. Oops!

I think you're better off now!
I think the answer is in here already, but the Street Rod option is THE ONLY WAY TO GO in MD. I assume you have the old VW title, either in your name, or signed over to you from the prior owner of the donor pan. That was the case for my car. You just go in w/ the street rod application (can get it on-line) and you get the new title and registration. They give you temp plates if you want to order vanity plates at the same time. I do not believe you will have to talk anybody into anything, just do the paperwork, and pay the money. PS: the money for Street Rod is $25.00, if I remember correctly, less than 1/3 of the "real" car fee. Really, it was easy-peasy, as a wise man once said.
