I've mentioned this guy here before; he's the guy in the area of the Bay Bridge, on the Capr St. Claire side, who has the ancient IM.

I went over again yesterday to give him a hand, and he's really going to need help sorting out his car. Most of what needs to be done we can do between the two of us, but he's going to be trying to put it together when he gets his engine back from Sean in the next couple weeks.

Fred uses his car on a daily basis when it's running. Right now, it's not. There's a lot of rust that needs to be ground away, some pieces will need to be replaced and there will probably be some wiring to do. He's a New Englander at heart, and had it in mind to doo all of this by himself. Instead, he just kept driving it because it worked, and now he's in a pickle.

He's got a pickup he also drives (a work truck) and doesn't use the internet. I've mentioned Kelly and Paul as locals willing to help, and he's interested in taking you guys up on those offers. Contact me for his info.

Here's what we found with the rear body section removed:

His frame had been bent in an accident years ago, and cosmetically patched. It rubbed on his passenger's side carb manifold every time he hit a bump, and it looks like the torsional rotation of the engine from that impack caused a weakness in his case -- which has finally given up the ghost.

We removed the engine last night and straightened the frame out enough to weld the weak spots. His door sills are shot and will need replacing. His pans are toast, although he's a fibergalss master and will be fixing them himself. He's already got the carpet out.

Here are a couple more shots, just for y'all's reference. If you think you've got it badly ... trust me, you don't, compared to poor Fred.

I'll probably hit up Warren Miles for an engine case, since he has so many he could probably decorate his neighborhood with them -- and he's moving soon -- but if anybody knows where there's one for not a lot of money, I'm sure Fred could use the case.

The engine he has now has 130,000 miles on it, and was built in Mexico. It's a 1915cc with Berg goodies. Keep an ear to the ground, please. If this one can't be repaired, he'll be looking to move fairly quickly on a replacement.

I'll keep you posted on progress.
I just re-read my post. I wish we could edit them past an hour.

Rich, he doesn't have that kind of budget, and I doubt the car would hold up -- but thanks. David, that might work, depending on what Sean has to say about the case's prognosis. I'll let him know it's available. Please PM me some specifics, including what you'd want.

Cheers!
Roger that.

He's getting the case he has welded by Joey (ACVW mechanic and welder) at Best Foerign Cars in Severna Park tomorrow. He'll start from there. If the welder says he's good to go, he'll re-hang number one, re-fit the heads and go with what he has.

Then it's chassis work and wires.
I'm not really sure what he needs, but hands will be welcome.

He wants to put some reinforcement into his chassis (already drafted, now it's just building the pieces) and he has to put his engine back in. Then he'll re-seat the bodywork and be back in business.

I've been at work the last couple days, and he's gotten the case welded in the meantime. I'll get an update.
