Just askin...didn't turn up much on a matte black finish on a Speedy. I saw a Coupe on the SOC and sent a PM but no response..Any feed back on that look and maintaining that look on a Speedy?Half way there already.Maybe a red mobile Pegasus ,Lil bastard or number on the hood somewhere, just fun until it breaks down on the road somewhere remote. This is not a pretty car...but a work in progress, kinda rat roddy ,if you will.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Matte black should work well for the ratrod look you want. Since there's no reflections it can help hide imperfections in the bodywork. Used to see a lot of hotrods done up in matte black primer. Guy I know has a 57 Chevy in matte black with flames painted over it. Looks pretty good.

Downsides to a matte finish: if you want it to look really, really good, the bodywork underneath has to be perfect and the spray job has to be perfect because you can't sand it once it's applied. The finish will also tend to hold onto dirt and washing will eventually make the finish uneven.
Saw a matte black speedster, with black interior, parked outside the Grand Natl Roadster Show last year at Pomona. Talked a bit with the owner. Car done to a very high level. It gives an immediate impression of "OUTLAW" and feeling of strength due to the visual. The owner had limited himself to black and polished aluminum as the only two colors on the entire vehicle. It also inspired in me, thoughts of "rat rod" due to the accompanying car show.

I would say, if you go matte black, you should have some beans to back it up, and the owner needs just a bit of attitude.
Alan, I've been thinking for some time about doing the truck bedliner on the underside of the Sloppy Jalopy. If I understand correctly, there's one commercial process that involves heat, and another that doesn't. Any idea if there's a do-it-yourself kit that would get inside the nooks and crannies, like around the headlight buckets and such?
I know most use a roller, ala what we did for DeWalt's floorboards, but brushes don't seem to be the application of choice.
Any thoughts on a preferred product would be nice. I might be able to get that done in my garage this winter, especially if there's a room-temperature product I can do at home.

Maybe the Hoopty would look good in matte black, too. ...
Well this started as a laugh but, I have seen a older pick up that was done in roller applied Herculon. Issue is once you have it on the Hoopty, it's there and you're going to have to like it and any future owner would need to have an eye for it too. IMHO, I would do my pwn body prep and take your ride over to Maaco and get a higher end job there. I had Kim's Miata painted over the summer for $450 and it's a decent job.... see it at the Pumpkin Run. ~Alan
Al:

Cory's thinking of applying bedliner to the underside of the Hoopty.

No, a paint roller doesn't make it. I used a regular bristle brush on the red speedie down here with good luck, and then the spray-on stuff from NAPA for those hard-to-reach areas. I also have the luxury of a ceiling-mounted winch to get one end at a time of the pan off the floor and make it easy to apply the paint. (Scared the heck out of Kathy once when I had one end up to the ceiling and she walked out to the shop to say hi!.....)
Thanks for all the great info and replies, I was in "sailboat hell" for a couple of days and haven't check the thread till now, in my brand new "New Balance" runners. Am I white or what! I don't think you can be whiter (paler) than a Norwegian/Welshman from North Vancouver B.C. When I need to read in the dark I just roll up my pants a couple of inches.Sorry for the drift, you guys are hilarious!
I'm not trying to look young I just have a "werk in progress" and don't want to spend the frogskinz on a new paint job till its ready.
