ok here is a straight answer to your question 180f to 225f is normal for a type1. This isn't to say that if your at 225f that it is horrible, but if your going above that you are getting out of the normal range and engine damage can occur. Many times a top end overhaul is necessary as temperatures rise with wear and tear on the engine.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you that temperatures above this can be tolerated. Your engine is living on borrowed time and what could be a simple top end overhaul becomes a complete overhaul.

If you can keep the temperatures below 200f you can expect a lot longer engine life.

Now what should the cylinder head temps be running? This varies, but I don't really know.......I do know that mine were running at exhaust manifold measured with a laser temp probe
#1 280
#2 310
#3 320
#4 360

Do you see a problem here? You should because it shouldn't vary that much, but I haven't got new numbers yet since I had heads redone.
I am actually planning on going to a welded and balanced cooling fan and a OEM 356 alternator pulley. Im going to cut a hole in firewall to get air to the fan and I'm going to put in a oil cooler set up like george has. The head was actually no good on #3 and #4 as the valve guides were wore too much and the valves were not turning. After fixing this problem I'm still left with what caused it and thats why I'm going to do the extra work described above.
