I took advice from the site and a picked up a
front sway bar, steering coupler, a rear sway bar,
rear disc brakes and short shocks.
Now I need someone to install them.
Does anyone know of a mechanic or a front end shop
that does VWs in the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa, area?
Thanks, Deane
Deane,

I understand your desire to hire someone else to do it for you. There are those times when I'm not in the mood to exfoliate my knuckles; those special jobs that you know can be done for 100 bucks that could potentially cost you a good two weekends of time (1. figuring it out. 2. doing it the wrong way. 3. figuring it out again. 4. doing it the right way) and about $10 in band-aids.

I remember when I was growing up that we had a doctor living in town (Dr. Robinson) who was a surgeon and specialized in removing brain tumors. He also LOVED classic cars and owned many while he was alive, but dared not work on the messier bits, since it was always so difficult, afterwards, to get his hands clean and sterilized before surgery.

He had a son (Lee, now a System Engineer for SUN Microsystems) who turned into one of the best engine builders I know and did all the engine rebuilds for his dad's cars. When he's not solving customer problems for SUN, he's still building Street Rods and classics.

Guess that's how people tend toward specialized talents.
I can understand the mechanical part. I once took an adult auto education class (mainly to get access to a "free" brake job (well, I bought the parts and used their brake lathe). There were two oriental students in that class, and one day I had to show them where the oil filter was on their car. Between the two of them, they simply had no idea what an oil filter even looked!
One thing I've never figured out though, is why someone is in a self service gas station that advertises regular for $2.47 when one block up the street another station advertises $2.29? And yes, those ARE today's prices here in San Diego (but the weather is still nice!).
